Letter to the Editor: Court ruling not just racist, but sexist

Portsmouth Daily Times

Ohio’s Supreme Court, by a 5-2 decision, has now joined the Ohio State Patrol and Governor Taft in the continued depriving of law abiding Ohioans from defending themselves with a concealed weapon. It matters not that [45] other states allow their citizens such defense.

Opponents say this ruling reflects the will of a majority of Ohioans. This is an unproven statement. It has been 144 years (1859) since the law was written and 81 years(1922) since last upheld by the court.

Can anyone deny that crime has increased in the last 81 years? Criminals always have and always will have guns, yet law-abiding Ohioans are deemed unworthy by our Supreme Court of the right to protect ourselves, families, and livelihood with a concealed weapon.

Justice Pfeifer, in his majority decision wrote, “prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons helps maintain an orderly and safe society”. No statistics will bear this out.
Men, the stronger of the species, commit rape. Women, the weaker of the species get raped. Interesting isn’t it that the four male justices voted against concealed-carry and two female justices voted to allow it.

Now is the time for women and all gun owners to make your voice heard. Write, e-mail, phone your Ohio Representative, Senator, and Governor Taft telling them you want a concealed-carry law now, with no unrealistic restrictions.

Op-Ed: Guns, speech and the courts

By Sim Evans

Each generation must ratify the Constitution, or else it is of no account. The founders were cognizant of this when they provided the amendment mechanism, whereby future generations might adjust the Constitution from time to time. The absence of amendments was deemed proof of its tolerability.

But Americans have chosen a third course; they will neither abide by the Constitution, nor will they change it. Instead, they choose to interpret their way around it, and thereby hangs the tale.

The Second Amendment has long been the neglected stepchild of the Constitution. Dressed in rags, it stands without, and observes the bounty within. Commonly viewed as the illegitimate result of the king’s youthful indiscretion, the Second Child is a pariah, to be marginalized and ignored.

What's race got to do with it? A LOT.

By Chad D. Baus

As I described in my recent walk through the "Safest Neighborhood in the State", I mentioned that the most enjoyable part of my day was spent speaking to the many African-Americans who attended the event. I can honestly say that while we are often led to believe that minorities are nearly a block-vote against concealed carry legislation, EVERY single person of a minority race I spoke with at the 'Defense' Walk expressed interest in obtaining their personal right to self-defense. Every person but one, that is.

A reporter/photographer for CityBeat was in attendance. But judging from his extremely disapproving glare as I handed him the OFCC press release, in which we pointed out that the Supreme Court's continued ban on concealed firearms is racist in it's foundation, he didn't share the opinion of the rest of the people I talked to (including the two pro-CCW Black Panthers). And judging from his newspaper's coverage of the 'Defense' Walk, I don't think he or anyone else at the paper bothered to read it.

OFCC PAC Announces 2003 Endorsees

It would be impossible to research every local race in the state of Ohio for an off-year election. But there are a few contests which have peaked our interest, some because they are between pro-Conceal Carry Reform candidates and out-and-out liberal anti-gunners, and others because we wish to support pro-CCW candidates in positions that could one day lead them to the Statehouse or Governor's mansion.
