OSU Student Newspaper Publishes Anti-CCW Editorial

"I want my tax money back. They're obviously not using it to educate who ever wrote this!"

That's what one concerned citizen had to say after reading an anti-CCW editorial, published in OSU's student newspaper, "The Lantern".

Witness the platitudes: "No one should feel the need to have a weapon in his or her pocket, bag or suitcase. Accidents can occur -- guns can still go off. If any random person can carry a concealed weapon, who knows what could happen in the streets. Anystreet Drive could turn into something from "Gangs of New York" just because more people are allowed to carry weapons. It is ridiculous to carry a gun every single second of the day, because the gun can only lead to more danger." Like, ya' know????

Fortunately, there are other students at OSU who show signs of being much more worthy of our hard-earned tax dollars.

When a campus rapist prowled campus throughout 2002, victimizing defenseless female students, these students took action. OFCC was one of the first to report on fliers posted at OSU by FreeOhio, a grassroots student group, suggesting that students use Second Amendment rights to defend themselves against the serial rapist.

Updated!: The Lantern has published a pro-CCW response to the editorial, written by an OSU Staff member. To read the entire piece, click here (requires free login), or click on the "Read More..." link below for an archived version.

Letter to the Editor: Concealed-carry bill takes right approach

A pro-HB12 letter to the editor has been published in today's Columbus Dispatch.

The writer, Mike Place of Dublin, certainly knows something that Ohio Highway Patrol Superintendant Paul McClellan does not.

Taft: Ohio homeland security risk ''Elevated''; but you may not defend yourself

Don't panic but be prepared, Gov. Bob Taft said yesterday as he unveiled new homeland-security guidelines for the state's schools, businesses and homes.

The security levels, from green (low) to red (severe) adopted by the 21-member Ohio Security Task Force mirror the federal terrorism-alert levels.

Ohio is now at a yellow or elevated security level.

Taft said the outbreak of war with Iraq would cause new concerns.

"You can't rule out the possibility Ohio would be a target,'' Taft said.

OFCC PAC Commentary:
Ohio may be a target of terrorism, and yet if it were left up to Bob Taft, Ohio's citizens' constitutional rights to self-defense would continue to be outlawed.

Cleveland Plain Dealer's Latest Anti-CCW Editorial

The Cleveland Plain Dealer has a long history of publishing poorly written editorials, backed up with poor logic, opposing CCW reform. Occasionally they print these editorials on the Opinion page. More often, they are printed as news.

Today's editorial, entitled "Misguided Energy", chastises the Ohio House for making Ohioans' self-defense rights a high priority, and for "putting the state's real needs aside."

Their words are not worth even the miniscule bandwidth required to copy them on this website, but if you have the stomach, the editorial is available by clicking here.

Paper: Petro showing leadership where Montgomery failed to

In a (Columbus) ThisWeek op ed, staff writer Michael Maurer offers praise to recently-elected Attorney General Jim Petro for standing on his principles regarding a court matter unrelated to concealed carry reform.

But in the process of praising Petro's leadership, Maurer needed a little contrast.

He chose none other than the person who used to hold his office, now-State Auditor and governor-wanna-be Betty Montgomery, and gave as example her dealings with the Hamilton County CCW-ban constitutionality case, of which OFCC is a funding co-plaintiff.

Editorial: The Ohio Constitution is so clear [on CCW]

The Canton Repository has printed their second pro-concealed carry reform article this week. This time, it's in the form of an editorial representing the paper's official view.

The paper uses the Ohio Constitution as their backbone, and recognizes the clarity of Article I, Section 4, quoting it in their piece. They even go so far are recognize those who believe that even HB12's restrictions may not stand up to a Constitutional challenge, and point out that "absolutists" can test their theory in court when HB12 passes.
