Men armed with hammer rob ''no-guns'' gas station
Submitted by cbaus on Thu, 10/07/2004 - 15:41.This gas station is listed among the unsafe businesses in OFCC's Do Not Patronize While Armed database. Perhaps if they had posted a "no hammers" sign? Or better yet, a "no robberies" sign?

Robbery by hammer in Uh'ville
UHRICHSVILLE – Two men, one armed with a hammer, robbed the Starfire Service Station on W. McCauley Dr., Uhrichsville, early Tuesday.
According to Sgt. Vince Beal, police were called to the station at about 2:57 a.m. on a report that the business was just robbed by two men, one with a hammer.
Beal said a female clerk told them the man with the hammer was wearing a dark hooded jacket with something white over his face.
The second person is described as being about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and was wearing a white or light-colored hooded jacket.
Police were told the man with the hammer struck the instant lottery dispenser breaking the glass before ordering the clerk to give him the money.
Once the clerk emptied the cash register, she was ordered to pick up the register drawer and remove any money that may have been there as well.
An undisclosed amount of money was taken.
The clerk said she did not see a vehicle when the two left the store or which way they fled.
Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to contact police at (740) 922-1212.

Firing Line - Our liberal columnist learns how to stop worrying—and love handguns
By Gersh Kuntzman
I had just heard the news last week that the House had voted to repeal Washington, D.C.’s strict ban on handguns, so I did what any self-respecting, gun-hating liberal New York Jewish journalist would do: I went to the nearest rifle range to blast some lead.
This would not have been my first instinct, of course. No, my first reaction would have been to write Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Tex) an angry letter about the latest vote—as well as last month’s failure to reinstate the assault-weapon ban. But given that the National Rifle Association "Victory Fund" gave DeLay $4,950 last year and I gave DeLay $0,000 last year, I didn’t think he’d take my anti-gun argument seriously.
So I fell back on Plan B: Learn how to stop worrying and just love firearms.

AP: More seniors are gun owners

PLAISTOW, N.H. (AP) — Merilyn P. Senter, a selectman, is a former hunter who still has the .22-caliber rifle her father gave her on her seventh birthday.
Over the years, Senter, 69, added a shotgun and a handgun to her collection. She got the handgun for personal protection after she received two threatening phone calls, including one after her efforts on behalf of residents upset about what they believed was a hazardous waste site in town.
Senter bought a purse with a special compartment to carry her .38-caliber handgun, including on trips to the Statehouse when she was a state representative.
"People are shocked when they find out I carried a gun and that I’m a gun owner," Senter said. "I don’t know why they should be."
Firearms instructors in New Hampshire say they believe a growing number of senior citizens are becoming more familiar with guns, learning how to shoot to protect themselves and families from crimes.
The percentage of seniors who own guns is higher than for any other age group, according to surveys by the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center.
