OH businesses need to consider 'Extraordinary Liability Advisory' before banning
Submitted by cbaus on Wed, 03/10/2004 - 11:17.Ohioans For Concealed Carry is hearing from more and more businesses who are deciding AGAINST posting discriminatory signs banning CHL (concealed handgun license) -holders from their property while bearing arms for self-defense. Many of these businesses are deciding to do so after consulting with their partners, or branches, in other states which already have a concealed-carry law, and learning that the law has presented no problems.
We are also hearing from employees whose administrators are still considering whether or not to post signs, and about a few businesses who have already made the decision these discriminate their customers and/ or employees who hold a valid Ohio CHL (see Do Not Patronize While Armed).
OFCC has posted a new Extraordinary Liability Advisory, and is encouraging concerned employees and customers to distribute this Advisory when they become aware of considerations to post discriminatory signs banning CHL-holders who are exercising their constitutional right to bear arms for self-defense.
Ohio businesses will ignore this Advisory at their own risk!
Takes one to know one? Akron Mayor calls Country Diners owner an ''idiot''
Submitted by cbaus on Wed, 03/10/2004 - 10:31.Special thanks to OFCC supporter Murray Winland for sending us this Akron "idiot" report.
Upon passage of Ohio House Bill 12, Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic whined, "We took guns away from the Wild, Wild West more than 100 years ago,'' he said, "and we're revisiting it. I really think it's a sad day.
"It's a real indication of the wrong direction that the state of Ohio has gone with these right-wing folks down there driving the issues. I cannot believe... the typical soccer moms in suburbia who have helped put these people in office are going to feel good when they go to the nearest Wendy's... and find a bunch of people with guns strapped to their hips.''
Akron-area restauranteur Ed Davidian (Country Diners) responded by announcing that he would post discriminatory signs banning CHL-holders from enter his stores while armed.
In a February 5, 2004 story in the Akron Beacon Journal on an unrelated matter, Plusquellic said "Ed Davidian is an idiot. He's been an absolute screwball... I just discount a guy like that. I don't know his motivation, but it can't be sincere. He's never done anything but devious political things.''
Based on Plusquellic's comments about concealed carry, it appears it truly does take one to know one.

COLUMBUS - Marilyn Slaby was sworn in Tuesday as state representative from the 41st District.
Slaby, a Republican, will finish the unexpired term of Bryan Williams, who resigned after being named director of the Summit County Board of Elections.
"I welcome the opportunity to serve the citizens of the 41st House District and the chance to meet the challenges facing the state of Ohio,'' Slaby said.
Slaby already had filed petitions to run for the seat, before Williams resigned. She will face Democrat Brian Williams in November.
Slaby previously was an administrative assistant at the Board of Elections for 10 years, had owned the Yarn Shop and also works as a substitute elementary teacher.
"Marilyn Slaby has valuable experience to share as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives,'' House Speaker Larry Householder said. "Her background in education and as a businesswoman will be a tremendous asset to the people of Summit County and the state of Ohio.''
Slaby lives in Akron and is married to Ninth District Court of Appeals Judge Lynn Slaby.
