Letter to the Editor: Criminals have always had concealed carry

April 21, 2004
Newark Advocate

All of this talk about concealed carry and businesses posting "no firearms" signs is foolishness if you use common sense. Unless these places of business have had metal detectors at their entry, there have been illegal concealed carries in their establishments unknown for years. Criminals have always had concealed carry.

Section 9 Op-Ed: Concealed guns could be trouble in city parks

Among the uncertainties surrounding the state's new concealed carry law is whether cities and other political subdivisions can prohibit weapons in public parks.

City officials across the state say they would like to prohibit firearms in public areas for as far as the law will allow.

"It's just common sense when you're dealing with children that you don't want to play around with firearms in our public places," said Fremont Mayor Terry Overmyer.

But it's not that easy and Fremont Law Director Robert Hart advised the city against taking any formal action banning guns from parks. He believes the law does not provide for that action. So does Ottawa County Sheriff Craig Emahiser, who said, "There's no provision in the law preventing them from (carrying a concealed weapon)."

The Clark Co. Sheriff is one of many that have begun issuing licenses to qualified applicants.

  • Note to the few hold-out Sheriffs refusing to perform their duty under the law - Sheriff Kelley and the many others sheriffs who are issuing CCW
permits in accordance with the law are displaying the professionalism

  • Note to the gun ban lobby - it's not just middle-aged white males who choose to exercise their right to bear arms for self-defense.
  • Note to Ohio criminals: It's a new world in Ohio. You can no longer safely assume your victims are defenseless.

Eleanor Roberts on Wednesday morning picked up her Ohio concealed carry license, the first such gun permit issued in Clark County.

"For once I'm No. 1," said Roberts, 61, who secured the license so she would be prepared to defend her home.

"All the bad guys have the guns anyway, so now maybe they'll be a little hesitant to come and bother the good guys because they may have one," the retired civil servant said.

"We're making history today," Sheriff Gene A. Kelly said as he presented licenses to Roberts and a handful of others at the Sheriff's Office east substation. "These are good people. They've been waiting for this a long time."

CLEVELAND -- Security has been increased in the parking lot of a downtown building after a woman was reportedly sexually assaulted Tuesday evening in the parking garage of her office building, reported NewsChannel5.

Huntington Building officials said they have informed all tenants about the incident and have increased security staff, who will escort female workers to their cars.

According to police, the woman was leaving work, and was in the elevator of the Huntington Building parking garage, when a man allegedly followed her off the elevator.

He reportedly told her not to scream and forced her to walk to her car. He also reportedly had a small-caliber, semi-automatic weapon.

Police said the man sexually assaulted the woman in her car, took her purse and fled the scene. She waited until he was gone, then went back into the office building and reported the incident to security.

The victim's vehicle has been towed for evidence; her purse was later found on the scene, without credit cards or cash.
