Lessons from GRPC: Expanding gun ownership
Submitted by jirvine on Thu, 10/06/2005 - 23:10.By Jim Irvine
The Second Amendment Foundation’s (SAF) recent Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) was so packed with good information that it was impossible for me to share it all in one coherent article. This will be the first in a series of articles highlighting different topics from that conference.
The overall theme of this year's GRPC was, “Expanding gun ownership.”
I will forward one of the challenges Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) and founder of SAF made to everyone at the conference; to recruit one new gun owner in the next year. Once each quarter, take a friend, family member, co-worker, or neighbor to the range with you. If you are a hunter, consider introducing someone to hunting this fall. We believe that if you properly introduce four new people to shooting, one of them will likely become a gun owner.
Make it fun. Your goal is to take something that is scary to many people, and show them a good time. Teach your new shooter the safety rules. Read the range rules with them, and make sure they understand them. Encourage them to ask questions. As you increase their knowledge, you will remove their fear.

Endorsee: One party rule cost Columbus $20 million from gun owners
Submitted by cbaus on Thu, 10/06/2005 - 23:05.The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that just as Democrats seek to make one-party rule in state government a big issue as the scandals pile up at the Governor's Mansion, Republicans running for Columbus City Council are trying to make it an issue as they try to win seats at Democrat-controlled City Hall.
Among those Republicans running for council is Buckeye Firearms Association endorsee Phil Harmon, who points to one-party rule as the reason for the city's recent loss of $20 million in revenue from Second Amendment supporters.
From the story:
- Phil Harmon, a Republican not endorsed by the county party in his campaign for the council, said there must be some opposition on the council to debate issues.
He pointed to the assault weapons ban that the City Council passed 6-0 in July.
"That cost local businesses $20 million," said Harmon, referring to the decision by the National Rifle Association to pull its 2007 convention out of Columbus.
Harmon said that’s why he supports district representation to get opposing views on the council. All seven members are now elected at-large.
The council is unwilling to vote against Coleman’s policies because he is a fellow Democrat, Harmon said.
Phil Harmon is one of many 2005 Buckeye Firearms Association endorsees who needs your support!
