Op-Ed: Judicial system must do more to protect victims of stalking
Submitted by cbaus on Thu, 03/10/2005 - 16:45.Can anyone read the following op-ed and not wonder why some Ohio newspapers continue to insist on publishing the names of people who have obtained Concealed Handgun Licenses (including victims of domestic violence, etc.), and why the Ohio Newspaper Association and its members continue oppose efforts to close the Media Access Loophole in order to protect them?

Since Sept. 11, 2001, there has been an enormous focus on terrorism due to the attack on our own soil, which left Americans with a sense of fear like we have never known. Unfortunately, another form of "terrorism" that many live with daily is not from a foreign enemy, but from their own spouse.
When a very dear friend filed for divorce, her terrorist emerged. After years of struggling through an emotionally abusive relationship, she finally decided to end the relationship.
Eleven months and more than $17,000 later, our friend is still considered legally married to her terrorist. His terrorism comes in many forms: Following her, making hundreds of phone calls, breaking into her home and car, leaving "love notes" from her "imaginary boyfriend" just to let her know he's been there, and harassing babysitters, Realtors, lawyers, principals, the auto body shop, the car rental company and anyone else with a connection to her.
Can you relate to the intense fear this causes for the victim? When he drives by, is this the time he's going to stop and kill her?
Our courts require that her 6-year old-child, the suspect and the victim undergo counseling to determine when the child and this person responsible for 11 months of turmoil can visit. Would it change the psychologist's decision on visitation if the suspect decided to stalk him instead?
Are we so concerned with the perpetrator's rights that we limit the victim's rights to have a safe, happy life? Is the victim a "victim" of her own judicial system? Who would believe that in America a person has to look over her shoulder every minute of every day to see if he is there, lurking and watching. The fear is always there.
If you have the luxury of not being in such a situation, you may feel that you have nothing to worry about. But in reality, these stalkers are a threat to each of us. Imagine, sitting at your desk at work and this unstable stalker confronts his victim, your co-worker. You're fair game. Where will you hide?

State-mandated victim zone: Woman stabbed at UT
Submitted by cbaus on Thu, 03/10/2005 - 16:20.WTOL.com (CBS Toledo) is reporting that a 22-year-old woman says she was walking on campus near the Health and Human Services Building at the University of Toledo when two men reportedly dragged her behind some shrubbery during broad daylight.
The victim struggled and was stabbed in the left thigh with a knife during what police say may have been a robbery attempt. Police told WTOL she then ran to the campus emergency phone and called for help. The attackers took off, and have not been apprehended.
The news station reported that the campus was "pretty empty at the time of the attack, because it's spring break, but a few graduate students say the attack made them think about how safe it was on campus..."
Despite the high crime rates on college campuses, and despite the fact that at 18 years-of-age, citizens can bear arms in defense of their country, Ohio law denies students their constitutional right to bear arms for self-defense while on campus, and mandates that CHL-holders leave their firearms in their parked cars when entering a college campus. This simply should not be.

Gun battle suspects arrested at ''no-guns'' Good Samaritan Hospital
Submitted by cbaus on Thu, 03/10/2005 - 16:09.WDTN.com (NBC Dayton) is reporting that "a gun battle spilled over into [the]...parking lot" of the 'no-guns' Good Samaritan hospital Tuesday.
According to the story, the shootout began on McCleary Avenue in Dayton, where one man was hit several times.
From the story:
- When an ambulance raced him to the hospital, detectives say his friends and enemies followed.
The two groups exchanged words, and allegedly threatened hospital security guards who tried to break it up.
That's when police were called to the scene.
With guns drawn, more than twenty officers diffused the explosive fight.
Delano Beverly watched in shock.
He said, "It's scary, and the thing about it is, young kids, all young kids. It's a shame."
Police say they found guns and drugs on the men and in their cars.
An OFCC supporter has verified that Good Samaritan hospital, a privately-owned, for-profit facility, posts "no-guns" signs. While doing his research, our suporter also noticed that it is likely the reason hospital guards were unable to do anything to stop the altercation was that they appear to be unarmed.
