Senate passes HB9, attempts to clean up media access loophole

By Chad D. Baus

Little noticed after the first veto-override in more than a quarter-century was Senate passage of House Bill 9, the public records bill, which contains an attempt by the legislature to clarify its intent for giving journalists access to records of concealed handgun license-holders.

On Wednesday, December 13, the Senate Judiciary Committee on Criminal Justice, chaired by Sen. David Goodman, voted HB9 out of committee. The bill cleared the full Senate later that day by a 31-1 vote.

From the Canton Repository:

When the legislation left the House on March 15, it allowed applicants for a concealed weapons license to opt out of the release of their names, counties of residence and dates of birth to journalists.

There is no opt-out provision in current law, which allows journalists to copy the license information. The Senate version approved Wednesday said journalists can view the information but not copy it.

BILL OF RIGHTS DAY - December 15th, 2006

By Rick Jones and Larry Moore

As the old saying goes, “if you don’t know your rights, you don’t have any”.

In today’s society of hustle and bustle one really doesn’t take the time to really think about what their rights are. We take these rights for granted. Just about everyone knows what the First Amendment to the Constitution is, freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and freedom to petition the government, the Second is the right to bear arms and the Fifth Amendment is the right to trial by jury, double jeopardy, self-incrimination and due process of the law.

There is a bumper sticker that says, "If you can read this, thank a teacher". Well, if you didn't know the date of the adoption of the Bill of Rights, blame the National Education Association (NEA).

Just how many amendments are there to the constitution? When was the original Bill of Rights ratified? How many are there? I’m sure there are some that already know that the original Bill of Rights was ratified on December 15th, 1791 and that there were 12 original Amendments in it, but only 10 of those were ratified by the states by 1791. Our Founding Fathers put great thought and planning in these original 10 Amendments and since its inception in 1791 to today there has only been 17 more added for a grand total of 27 amendments to our Constitution. These basic rights include everything from the freedom of religion to women’s right to vote to search and seizure.

Sex and Guns

By Gerard Valentino

When abstinence is floated as a way to keep teenagers from having unwanted pregnancies, the left is openly scornful of the idea. Liberals claim that sex-education and familiarity with contraception are the only viable way to teach teenagers to practice safe sex. They argue that kids are going to have sex so it is important to teach them how to avoid the pitfalls involved with irresponsible behavior.

Liberals preach education as the answer for a host of other social ills as well, including discrimination, sexism and environmental issues.

Funny, however, that the only problem liberals refuse to attack with so-called education are accidental gun deaths among children. When it comes to guns, liberals and anti-gun groups, are unwilling to discuss how educating children can lead to a decrease in the very type of accident they use to justify their existence.
