Leaders in Conservation Team with USSA to Sponsor Statewide Candidates’ Reception
(Columbus) - The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) has teamed with key conservation groups and outdoor businesses to host a Candidate Forum. The event will allow Ohio sportsmen to meet with nominees for statewide and local offices including governor.
Forum sponsors include the National Wild Turkey Federation Ohio State Chapter, Buckeye Firearms Association, Gander Mountain, Ohio State Trappers Association, Pheasants Forever, and Ducks Unlimited.
The event will feature remarks by a special guest from the National Rifle Association, which is also sponsoring the forum.
The more informed sportsmen are about their candidates, the better decisions they can make at the polls. The candidate reception will be March 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Athletic Club of Columbus. The Athletic Club is located at 136 E. Broad St. in downtown Columbus.
Candidates for governor, attorney general, secretary of state and other offices will be on hand to listen to sportsmen’s concerns and ideas. Legislative candidates for the Ohio House of Representatives and Senate will also meet outdoorsmen.
“Ohio legislators support conservation initiatives because sportsmen constituents express their views on these topics,” said Anthony Celebrezze USSA’s director of state services. “The USSA and the Candidate Forum sponsors have planned the upcoming forum to provide sportsmen with an opportunity to prepare for future legislative proposals by educating and discussing issues with candidates.”
The 2006 Candidate Forum comes at an opportune time. Sportsmen can learn candidates’ opinions about conservation issues before going to the polls for the primary election on May 2, 2006.
The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance protects the rights of hunters, anglers and trappers in the courts, legislatures, at the ballot, in Congress and through public education programs. Your Job Or Your Life
Submitted by cbaus on Fri, 03/03/2006 - 01:10.By Chris Chumita
The State of Ohio took a giant step in restoring its citizens’ Second Amendment rights on January 7th, 2004. On that date, the Ohio General Assembly passed a law that allows citizens to obtain a CHL (concealed handgun license). Safety-minded people were finally able to legally carry a handgun to protect themselves and their loved ones.
However, many law-abiding CHL holders are forced to make a hard decision; their job or their life. Throughout the state, a large number of employers are threatening their employees with termination if they keep a firearm in their vehicle on company property. If the employee complies with the policy, they are left vulnerable to an attack while commuting to and from work.
An employee cannot always quit their job, because their family relies on them for financial security. They often end up playing the odds that they will not be attacked while commuting to and from work. Unfortunately, that decision can leave their family without a mother or father.

Survey: Women OK with hunting
Submitted by cbaus on Fri, 03/03/2006 - 01:05.The following excerpt is from a March 1, 2006 Washington Times article written by Gene Mueller:
- I have no idea how accurate the National Wild Turkey Federation's numbers are, but the Edgefield, S.C.-based hunter/conservation group says 95 percent of women in the United States approve of female hunters....
....Through the turkey federation's Women in the Outdoors program, some 40,000 females across the country are learning outdoor skills and hobbies, such as camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, kayaking and birdwatching.
The NWTF says it hopes to reach women from all walks of life through 18 full-time Women in the Outdoors regional coordinators and a quarterly magazine that is strictly geared to their interests.
So why not get moms, sisters, wives, daughters and girlfriends into activities that for far too long were the exclusive dominion of men? Shame on us for being so selfish.
Commentary by Larry S. Moore
Women are the fastest growing segment of the shooting sports, which to me in a very broad interpretation, includes hunting.
Recently more of the non-shooting sports media is picking up on the fact that women enjoy the shooting sports. The Washington Times article notes that women, who may not hunt, are okay with hunting.
Some women are embracing hunting for a variety of reasons. Whatever the reasons, we certainly need to open the doors to all aspects of the shooting sports to women. There are many events, such as Women in the Outdoors, that offer those opportunities to women.
However, just as word of mouth is the best advertising, taking the time to the lady (or ladies) in your life hunting may make as big an impact on you as it does on them.
