Latest Blade report on gun violence continues to ask all the wrong questions

By Ken Hanson

The Toledo Blade reaffirms their lack of credibility on gun crime issues in their coverage of the murder of Toledo Detective Keith Dressel. The bias in the story is almost as outrageous as the murder itself.

Too often readers are facing bias in news coverage, whether they realize it or not. Since we are facing a very real danger of being desensitized to this bias, it is critical to expose it when it is found, and have readers ask very pointed questions of the editors.

First, we would encourage you to read the article by Blade Staff Writer Robin Erb, prior to reading this commentary. It can be found at:

http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070222/NEWS03/702220394/-1/NEWS

Before we even begin to examine the bias of the story itself, let us look at the editorial bias underpinning the story. It is no secret that the editorial policy of the Toledo Blade is rabidly anti-gun. This is their prerogative – they are entitled to editorialize however they see fit. Where this bias crosses over into tainting and slanting the news coverage, clearly journalistic ethics are being sacrificed at the altar of their anti-gun beliefs.

Hoplophobes also to blame for the Trolley Square Mall slaughter in Utah

By Tim Inwood

As I watched the news reports on the shooting at the
Trolley Square Mall in Salt Lake City, I was saddened
but not surprised by how the obtuse, liberal anti-gun
media continues to miss the real message of what
happened. They should not have missed it, as it is
nothing new. A well meaning dullard who owns private
property (in this case a shopping mall) tells people
you can’t carry a gun here for defense and - surprise, surprise - some one with criminal intent ignores it and
kills many unarmed victims who obeyed the dullard’s
rules. In other words, the misguided policys of stupid
Hoplophobes is getting us killed.

That’s right, I blame not only that crazed idiot
Sulejmen Talovic, who was doing the shooting, but also
the fool who decided to post rule #10 on the doors of
that mall saying you could not carry a weapon on their
property. You see, the law abiding citizen obeys those
laws, deranged criminals do not. Luckily for the folks
in that mall an off-duty police officer named Ken
Hammond ignored that sign and was carrying his gun
that night. Sadly, it took him several minutes to get
to where Talovic was shooting innocents and stop the
carnage. By then 5 people were already dead and
another 5 were wounded.

This week's "Friday Flashback" is....

And They Ask Me Why I Carry? Part II

By Linda Walker

In Part I, which was inspired by the occasion of September being “Realtor Safety Month”, I offered commentary which revolved around the fact that as real estate agents, we are never given information about concealed carry being a viable option in our self protection. Instead, we are taught useless self defense tactics that may give someone a false sense of security. I received huge response from real estate agents and brokers from across the country after reading my article.

I was relayed countless stories of agents knowing someone who had been attacked, put in bad situations, or had a scare while out just trying to make a living. I also heard from buyers who had been looking at properties with their unarmed real estate agents and encountered a scare. It warmed my heart that many of those agents and brokers who contacted me, are also my fellow concealed carry license holders, and many also instruct CCW classes!

After the article had been posted on Buckeye Firearms Association website for a couple days, I was contacted by Cam Edwards of NRANews (NRANews.com) to do a live interview with him about my article. In preparation for my appearance on NRANews, I researched the National Association of Realtors website. I found a 6 minute video on their website entitled “Don’t Be a Victim-Personal Safety for Realtors”. I intently watched this video hoping for just a small hint of a pro-CCW message. To my shock and dismay, I found the complete opposite.

Under the heading “Don’t Carry a Firearm”, I quote the 2 sentences the NAR follows up with:

“We don’t recommend carrying them because they could be used against you with fatal results. If confronted by a knife or gun, don’t resist and give him whatever he wants and wait for the opportunity to run.”

“Don’t resist and give him whatever he wants????” The National Association of Realtors is telling me to submit to being raped. Submit to being thrown in the trunk of my car. Submit to whatever he wants to do to me! That is not a viable answer to me. I will not submit to being a willing victim! And I don’t care if it is the organization that I am (forced to be) a member of that is telling me to give him whatever he wants, in the name of being politically correct. I will not give him whatever he wants.

Obviously, the NAR does not have my best interest in mind with these types if ludicrous comments. So more than two weeks ago, I emailed the top nine elected officers of the National Assoc. of Realtors the following email.
