The Roanoke Times is the latest newspaper to discover that just because something can be done does not mean it should be done.
As reported by Michelle Malkin and others, the Times on March 11 ran an editorial titled "Shedding Light on Concealed Handguns" announcing that it was publishing a list of everyone in Virginia's New River Valley possessing a concealed carry permit.
This type of story has become a ritual event with second and third-tier news outlets across the country. Others who have published similar stories include the suburban New York Westchester-Rockland Journal News, the Argus Leader of South Dakota, the Free Lance-Star of Fredericksburg, and the NBC24 television station in Toledo, Ohio. All of these outfits act as if they're carrying out some sort of a public service, though none is clear as to precisely what that might be.

Op-Ed: Rudy's Gun-Control Agenda

The 2007 version of Rudy Giuliani defends his past support of gun control as a necessary evil to fight crime in a big city.
When pressed recently about his views on the 2nd Amendment by Sean Hannity of Fox News, Giuliani attempted to tap dance around his gun-control record without alienating the 290 million Americans who don’t live in New York City. The former mayor told Hannity that gun control was “appropriate” for the city, but that states and cities should be allowed to make those decisions locally.
“So,” Hannity continued, “you would support a state’s rights to choose on specific gun laws?”
“Yes, I mean, a place like New York that is densely populated or maybe a place that is experiencing a serious crime problem ... maybe you have one solution there and in another place, more rural, more suburban, other issues, you have a different set of rules,” answered Giuliani.
Apparently, in Giuliani’s America, law-abiding citizens in large cities would not enjoy the same constitutional liberties as the rest of the country. Are metro-Americans not deserving of the right to self-protection?
Disarming citizens because they live in a high-crime area is taking away the most effective means of self defense from the people who need it most. Creating mandatory victims is no way to fight a crime problem.
If Giuliani’s gun-control agenda were really limited “only” to big cities, that would be disturbing enough. But the record shows that Rudy continually tried to export his gun-control agenda to the rest of the nation. (emphasis added)

Violent Crime Rising......or is it?
By Tim Inwood
"Murders, gun crimes rise - A federal report confirms increases in U.S. homicides and violence with firearms." - recent headline in the LA Times.
From the story, commenting on the FBI preliminary crime report...
"This report tells us more the serious events - robbery and gun crimes - increased and the FBI already told us homicides increased," said criminal justice professor James Alan Fox of Northeastern University...
Professor Alfred Blumstein of Carnegie Mellon University said the rise in gun violence was particularly troubling.
"A major police effort to confiscate guns helped bring down the surge in violent crime that occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s," Blumstein said. "But gun distribution is easier now because we have begun to back off gun control."
Backed by the National Rifle Association, the Bush administration has been cool toward gun control measures."
According to media pundits and some rather biased academics they interview or bring on their programs, violent crime is on the rise in the USA. Never mind that these are preliminary statistics for 2005 released by the FBI (these will no doubt be revised as they are every year). This trend supposedly is especially the case in Midwestern states like Ohio. I will concede from what I have read in newspapers, that this is true of UDF stores and 5/3 banks in Ohio. Making my point are the recent robberies of a UDF in Clermont County on the 5th of September and one in Columbus, which was robbed on the 10th. The incident in Columbus even saw one of the employees being "pistol whipped." These two companies and others who have voluntarily "posted" the no CCW signs have made a terrible mistake
