Senate Committee Postpones Hearing/ Vote on "Castle Doctrine" Legislation

Last week we were pleased to announce that Senate Bill 184, Ohio's Castle Doctrine bill, had been added to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Criminal Justice's agenda for Wednesday and Thursday of this week for the purpose of adopting amendments and voting on a substitute bill.

Unfortunately, Buckeye Firearms Association has received word that committee chairman Tim Grendell has run into an unexpected, unavoidable conflict this week that necessitates a postponement of this week's Senate hearings.

A companion Castle Doctrine bill, House Bill 264, is still scheduled to be heard by the House Criminal Justice Committee on Thursday, March 13 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Statehouse Room 121.

Stay tuned to BuckeyeFirearms.org for news on when Chairman Grendell reschedules the Senate hearings.

They're Coming for Your Guns

By Brian S. Stewart

Tucked into the final paragraph, a recent story in U.S. News and World Report highlighted the Washington D.C. Police Gun Recovery Unit, a unit of about two dozen officers whose mandate is exactly as it sounds:

Every day about two dozen officers fan out across the city's roughest neighborhoods, stopping drivers and pedestrians for traffic and other offenses and executing warrants in search of illegal guns.

The accompanying video will make law-abiding gun owners queasy.

Op-Ed: Why you should carry every day

By Gerard Valentino
World Net Daily

Several spree killings in non-permissive places like colleges or in states that don't have concealed-carry laws have blasted the gun-control debate back onto the national stage. Pro-gun advocates accurately pointed out that in Illinois, where two of the spree killings took place, citizens are denied their constitutional right to self-defense through the right to bear arms. Being disarmed in the face of a deranged killer must be a terrifying experience.

Even worse, however, is finding yourself at the mercy of an armed thug after you made the decision not to carry because you were just running to the store.

A spree killing in a state like Florida that has a good shall-issue concealed-carry law is a truly tragic occurrence, because people there have the right to carry a gun. Most people won't take advantage of their right and instead walk around oblivious to the danger around them. It is not their fault, however, since modern liberal theory says we should meekly submit to armed attackers.

Such advice is dangerous, and people are dying because the establishment media continue to put forth the ridiculous notion that fighting back will lead to an increase in violence.
