The Marietta Times is reporting that today's opening of deer gun season in the Buckeye State will bring some good news regarding the state's suffering economy.

Susie Vance with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources said the state is rated sixth among the top 10 or 12 states that receive the most economic impact from hunters and fishermen.

"Our state is really appealing to hunters from all over," she said. "We have a very healthy deer herd with no CWD (chronic wasting disease), and we have a four-month archery season, and have added an extra weekend to our deer gun season."

Vance added that although the state's hunting license sales had been declining over the last 10 to 20 years, those sales have increased by 5 percent this year.

Alan Babb, 46, of Rinard Mills was purchasing his hunting license and a deer tag at the Marietta Kmart on Pike Street Monday afternoon.

"I was laid off from my job as a contractor in June," Babb said. "So this license will help put food on our table this winter."

Kmart sales associate James Everson said he's heard the same story from many customers purchasing hunting licences this year.

"We're seeing more business this year," he said. "A lot of them just like to hunt, but some are hunting to feed their own families or to provide meat for others."

COLUMBUS, OH - Young hunters across Ohio again enjoyed success during the seventh annual Youth Deer-Gun Season, held Saturday and Sunday, November 21-22. Hunters age 17 and under killed 9,331 deer during the special two-day season, aimed at providing a high-quality hunting experience for younger Ohioans. Last year's youth hunt saw a deer harvest of 9,852.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife estimated 40,000 young hunters took to the state's fields and forests during the two-day season.

Success in any political battle requires "spreading the word," aggressively and relentlessly. This is especially true with gun rights. To win hearts and minds, to get pro-gun candidates elected, and to assure good gun laws are passed and bad gun laws are defeated, we must get our message out to as many people as possible.

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – Based on his longstanding support for Second Amendment rights, Attorney General Richard Cordray announced today that his office has co-sponsored an amicus brief in the United States Supreme Court, arguing that these rights should be protected from undue restrictions imposed by state and local governments.

The Supreme Court is examining this issue in the case of McDonald v. Chicago, based upon the court's landmark ruling last year in District of Columbia v. Heller. That ruling recognized that, with respect to the federal government, the Second Amendment affords individuals the right to keep and bear arms.

"We are proud to defend the Second Amendment rights of Ohioans in this important Supreme Court case. We are joining with other state attorneys general in arguing that the court should hold that the people's constitutional right to keep and bear arms is fundamental and cannot be denied by state and local governments," Cordray said.

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that plans for the first public indoor shooting range in Columbus are being opposed by some area residents.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor -- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

On February 25, 2009, headlines such as ABC News' "Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban" turned an election-related spike in gun sales into a frenzy that has only recently begun to moderate.

The news of a pending push by Obama to ban many semi-automatic rifles was sparked by comments from newly-minted Attorney General Eric Holder, who told reporters that "As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons." He went on to indicate that the administration had decided on a new angle of attack to push for the ban: the war on drugs.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Despite claims of a gun trafficking highway running from the U.S. the Mexico having been immediately and thoroughly debunked (see here and here and here) the president said at a press conference in Mexico City in April that he has "not backed off at all from my belief that the assault weapons ban makes sense."

Last week, even as Holder indicated his office is "currently reviewing existing gun laws to determine how best to combat gun violence and keep guns out of the hands of criminals and others prohibited from possessing them," echoes of the Obama administration's calls for a gun ban became even louder.

Our interest in a single Supreme Court case has perhaps never been as high as it is in a case currently being briefed. The issues are fascinating on several levels, and the potential impact of a ruling is big.

The case is McDonald v. City of Chicago, for which the court granted cert on Sept. 30. The petitioners in the case, a group challenging a gun-control ordinance in Chicago, filed their brief with the court earlier this week. Were the court to adopt their position — something well within the realm of possibility — we could be looking at a significant shift in the way the justices view the Constitution and individual rights.

At issue, again, is the constitutionality of a gun-control ordinance in Chicago. The Supreme Court shot down Washington, D.C.'s gun-control ordinance two terms ago, in D.C. v. Heller. But the Heller opinion dealt with a federal statute, not a state statute, and several federal courts have since ruled that the Heller opinion does not apply to state statutes. That is, the Second Amendment does not (yet) apply to the states.
