The gun banners' forgotten push for open carry in Ohio

By Chad D. Baus

In a recent editorial entitled "Gun Lobby Working Overtime to Normalize Abnormal Behavior," the Joyce Foundation's anti-gun blog "GunGuys" asked if readers would be willing to "sip hot chocolate with your toddler at Starbucks while a fellow patron openly displays a gun at the table next to you?"

But before they chide gun rights activists for advocating the practice of open carry, they might want to consider some of the comments made by their fellow gun ban extremists in Ohio during the battle to establish a concealed carry law in the Buckeye state.

Ohio Hunters Provide Red Meat to Local Food Pantries

COLUMBUS, OHIO - Ohio deer hunters have donated more than 54,800 pounds of venison to local food banks through the 2008-09 deer hunting season, according to Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

The 54,800 pounds of venison equals approximately 219,200 meals for Ohioans in need. Last year, FHFH collected 20,902 pounds of venison throughout the season. A total of 1,096 deer were donated this deer hunting season compared to 418 in 2007-08.

"Many deer hunters took the extra step to help offset hunger felt by Ohioans," said Jim Marshall, assistant chief of the Division of Wildlife. "The Division of Wildlife hopes to partner with FHFH again this next deer season."
