"Governor Ted and First Lady Frances Strickland Host Sportsmen Reception at the Governor’s Mansion"

Or as I might prefer to say, "the real 4x4 trucks invaded Bexley”.

However you say it, I was very fortunate to receive an invitation. This is the first time that I am aware there has been a sportsmen reception at the Governor’s Mansion. Sportsmen are fortunate to have a Governor who recognizes the constituent base.

The reception was quite packed with the crowd estimated at about 200. The gates opened promptly at 5:00 PM with minimal security check and we were directed into the Governor’s Mansion. Asst ODNR Director Tony Celebrezze attended and helped guide me through the process.

First Lady Frances Strickland greeted everyone inside and directed us to the food and beverages. Later she gave informal tours, answered questions and provided tidbits of info on the mansion. She is very much a people person, quite pleasant and with an enjoyable sweet southern hills accent. The First Lady and I briefly chatted about Fish Ohio Day last summer. She commented about the great time there and how much she enjoyed Lake Erie. She noted that she has enjoyed seeing the natural beauty across all of Ohio.

Governor Strickland works a crowd very well. He was extremely pleasant, gracious and made an attempt to say hello to everyone. He did not arrive until about 5:30PM.

Governor Strickland kept his comments short saying he wanted to thank everyone for attending. He welcomed us to "your" house and saying he is privileged to be living there. The Governor spoke about our love of the Ohio out of doors and passion about all the great resources of Ohio. He thanked everyone for the efforts regarding conservation and the things we do for Ohio. He asked us to continue to share our vision of the bounty of Ohio. He asked that each of us continue those efforts for the future of Ohio. He also asked that we continue to partner with him and the ODNR leadership for the betterment of Ohio. He, somewhat jokingly said to gently let them know when they are wrong, to be persistent to make sure they get the message and to share with them in our successes. He also joked and asked us if we "enjoyed the brisk outdoor hike in Bexley since the parking situation is so limited".

Governor Strickland continues to say the right things and strike the right cords for sportsmen. His comments were very well received. Governor Strickland, whose campaign courted sportsmen very early, continues to keep his contacts with the sportsmen community very open and very active.
