Columbus homeowner defends life during home invasion

WNBS10TV.com is reporting that two men tried to rob a home east Columbus, and that the homeowner shot one of the robbers.

According to the report, two men charged into the home and came face-to-face with the armed homeowner. The robber fired a shot, which grazed the homeowner, who then returned fire. Police say the robber died from those wounds. Police were able to track down the other suspect.

Newark police are investigating a possible link between Saturday's West Church Street shooting and a burglary where a resident was held against his will less than 30 minutes later on Oak Street.

At about 7:45 p.m. Saturday night, police say three gunmen stormed into a 283 W. Church St. boarding house's common area, briefly held a resident against his will and fired shots into a room. One of the shots hit Shawn Payton, 21, originally from Zanesville, who was transported to Grant Hospital in Columbus, where his condition information is being withheld.

At 8:10 p.m. Saturday, a resident of Oak Street said three armed men came to his house, kicked in the door and tied him up, according to Newark police records.

Sgt. Craig Riley said that while no definitive link has yet been made between the two events, police are examining them as potentially connected.

  • Dayton: Woman shot while fleeing home invader
A Dayton woman was shot while trying to escape from an intruder inside her house in the 400 block of West Norman Avenue, police said Monday.

When they arrived at the 400 block, they were flagged down by a man and a woman who took police to their duplex home. When the officers went inside, they found a woman on the floor in the living room with a gunshot wound to her left thigh.

The woman came to the couple's house and told them that she had been shot in her house, which is next door. The woman told police that she had been sitting on her couch when she heard a knock at her front door. She got up and looked out her window and saw a woman standing on her porch. When she couldn't make out what the female was saying, she went back to her couch. She then heard a loud noise in her kitchen and realized someone was trying to kick open her back door.

The woman then unlocked her front door and ran out before tripping and falling on the steps. When she got up, she heard someone yell and what sounded like a number of gunshots. The woman said she felt a sharp pain in her leg as she ran to her neighbor's house for help. Officers searched the woman's home, which had been ransacked and a rear door forced open, but found no suspects.
