Supreme Court Candidate Maureen O'Connor Calls for Judicial Restraint

While not the most well-known statewide race this year, the decision of who replaces retiring Justice Andrew Douglas could have as much impact on the state, if not more, than any other statewide election.

Douglas has been a consistent member of the court's 4-3 majority in controversial cases, including striking down school funding, overturning civil lawsuit limits (tort reform), expanding insurance liability for businesses, and securing workers' compensation claims.

If O'Connor is elected, many believe that 4-3 majority will be reversed.

Calling it an "activist court," O'Connor, 51, says the majority has helped perpetuate an anti-business climate in Ohio.

"I'm very anxious to shift the philosophy of the court to one of more judicial restraint," she said. "I do not believe the balance of power calls for one branch -- such as the Supreme Court -- to usurp the authority of the policy-making branch of the Legislature. We have seen that all too often in the decisions."

O'Connor said she would strive to make the courts more user-friendly and find ways to better-inform people of how they operate.

"When I go around the state and approach non-lawyer groups about a Supreme Court race, the response is, 'We vote for the Supreme Court?'" she said.

Ohio House 42: No-Win District for Conceal Carry Reform?

Unfortunately for pro-Conceal Carry Reform voters in House District 42, there is no clear choice for a candidate to represent their constitutional self-defense rights. There is an independant candidate with good local name recognition running for the office, but he has thus far rchosen not to answer candidate survey queries.

John Widowfield, who was appointed to a vacant Republican Ohio House seat and is seeking his first vote from the people, has consistently voted against legislation that would allow more Ohioans to carry concealed weapons.

In the words of the Akron Beacon Journal, his Democrat opponent "offers few strong arguments for replacing Widowfield."

The redrawn 42nd District includes most of Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Stow, Silver Lake and Munroe Falls.

OFCC PAC recommends that voters interested in having their self-defense rights restored should consider a write-in or independent party candidate.

Akron Beacon Journal/ OFCC PAC endorse Mary Taylor (R) for House 43

Republican Mary Taylor is seeking to replace term-limited Twyla Roman in Ohio House, District 43. Both OFCC PAC and the Akron Beacon Journal endorse her.

In the newspaper's words, Taylor "is regarded as knowledgeable, committed and articulate. A certified public accoutant with a master's degree in accounting, Taylor specializes in business and tax consulting. Taylor would add an independent-minded, professional perspective.

Her opponent's "experience in politics has not been without its flaws. On key economic development issues, his grasp falls short of his opponent. The edge belongs to Taylor."

OFCC PAC has evaluated Taylor and her opponent. We found that Taylor is committed to being a strong advocate for Conceal Carry Reform and self-defense rights in the Ohio House.

OFCC PAC believes her election will ensure continued strong support for Ohio CCW initiatives in the House.

The 43rd House District is in southern Summit and Portage counties.

Republican Charles Calvert is seeling re-election as Ohio House Representative in the 69th District. Both OFCC PAC and the Akron Beacon Journal endorse him.

In the newspaper's words, "Calvert plays an important role in the House Republican caucus. His steady temperament and experience in financial management have aided the budgeting process at the Statehouse."

"He contributes significantly to the workings of the legislature. He is seeking a third, two-year term. The House would continue to benefit from his presence. We recommend the re-election of Charles Calvert."

OFCC PAC has been impressed with Chuck Calvert's voting record on CCW/self-defense-related issues. His familiarity and experience with HB274, for which he voted yes, ensures continued strong support for Ohio CCW initiatives in the House.

Akron Beacon Journal/ OFCC PAC endorse Terri Hauenstein (R) for House 68

Republican Terri Hauenstein is campaigning to replace term-limited Ann Womer-Benjamin as Ohio House Representative in Portage County's 68th District. Both OFCC PAC and the Akron Beacon Journal endorse her.

In the newspaper's words, "Hauenstein is the better candidate. Where Hauenstein would confront the political process, [her opponent] seems in danger of getting bogged down."

"Terri Hauenstein was first elected to the Aurora school board in 1997, where she serves as vice president. She can point to shaping a master plan for Aurora schools, and tackling policies to improve reading achievement."

OFCC PAC has reviewed these candidates, and observes that Hauenstein is committed to being a strong advocate for Conceal Carry Reform and self-defense rights in the Ohio House.
