Dire warnings from gun ban extremists already proving false

In a hysterical email message to supporters lamenting yet another day of failure (the Clinton Gun Ban sunset), gun ban extremist Toby Hoover said "The gun lobby is thrilled and taking orders for guns."

This claim has been oft repeated by extremists the gun ban lobby in recent weeks - if the ban sunsets, they screamed, assault weapons will be flooding the streets within hours!

The problem for the gun grabbers is...it hasn't happened. Just as those who truly understood the failed legislation predicted, newspapers are now reporting that gun dealers are not experiencing a rapid increase in demand:

  • Toledo, OH: Gun dealers see little change with end of ban
  • Dayton, OH: Expiration has not affected sales one way or another
  • Hagerstown, MD: Gun dealers say death of ban won't matter much
  • Port Huron, MI: Assault rifle ban expires quietly
  • Havre, MT: Montana gun dealers expect little change from lifting of ban
  • Hampton Union, NH: No effect to end of assault weapons ban
  • Chambersburg, PA: Gun dealers don't expect all-out assault
  • Philadelphia, PA: No rush on gun shops after assault-weapons ban lapses

And on, and on, and on...

This isn't the first time gun ban extremists have been forced to engage in rhetorical revisionism.

In April 2004, Toby Hoover & other Ohio gun grabbers backed away from outrageous claims about what would happen if Ohio passed concealed carry, saying she and the rest of the gun ban lobby "never painted lurid pictures of bloody shootouts in the streets."

Quite a flip-flop from comments she made just the week before, telling Gannett News that "if we have more use of guns, then we're going to have more people who are injured and die."

Hoover debated OFCC's Chad Baus on WTOL Toledo minutes after learning House Bill 12 had been signed into law last January. To see video of Hoover repeating these warnings for Ohioans about concealed carry, click here (Windows Media).

  • Two more ''No-guns'' banks robbed this week

    align="left">
The Toledo Blade reported Friday that another Fifth Third bank has been robbed at gun point, despite having posted "no-guns" signs on its doors.

The man robbed the Fifth Third at 10105 Fremont Pike near Thompson Road, about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 16.

Authorities released a surveillance photo of the robbery in progress, where the robber can be seen pointing a semi-automatic pistol at the teller.

One week earlier, in Middletown, police say two men with guns in hand and bandannas obscuring their faces jumped from a van and charged into a "no-guns" MidFirst Credit Union yelling, "this is a robbery!"

On September 10, the Dayton Daily News reported three men in a minivan pulled up to the front door of the credit union and two of them got out while the third stayed in the driver's seat. The criminals are still at large.

What is it about the danger in these signs the following businesses can't
understand?? (Click on the Read More... link below to read two letters from officials at the Ohio Auto Club and Sofa Express).

Letters to Editors: Voices for and against right to self-defense in parks

Right to carry concealed weapons should include parks

This is in response to the letter to the editor from John Salyers dated Sept. 1.

In reference to his letter, I find his points thoughtful, intelligent, concise and very reasonable. I find your little rebuttal at the end proof that most liberals cannot answer factual statements with anything but shadowy rhetoric. You failed to address the outstanding points that were made by Mr. Salyers.

Most non-partisan studies have shown that states with shall-issue laws have a drastic reduction in violent crimes. Violent crimes happen in public parks quite often. I know, "not in Port Clinton," but never say never. Who would have thought our little bedroom community would have a rapist running around? Your point that businesses such as bars, churches and public buildings is moot because they are moderately controlled environments. I would not agree with the church issue if we were in the Middle East, but the times they are a changing, aren't they? Certainly, businesses have the right not to allow CCW, but then we are informed enough not to spend our money in their "criminal protection zones."

A park is an outdoor public space that is the same as the city streets, and if you can ban in the parks, what's next? Might as well repeal the law and let the criminals know we are defenseless so they can come back! Let's have another more right-infringing law worse than the so-called assault weapons ban so we can't even own guns. That's what Kerry wants to do.

Then we can throw out the First Amendment and disallow free speech and turn all the papers over the government control! Yeah! Thomas Jefferson said it best: "When citizens fear their government, you have tyranny, when the government fears its citizens, you have freedom." Thank you for presenting both points of view on this subject.

A voice against guns in parks

If you are so paranoid that you can't take your children to Clyde City Park to play on the swings or to watch a ball game without "packing a rod," maybe it's best if you just stay home.

With the death of the assault weapons ban and the success of concealed carry laws nationwide, proponents of 2nd Amendment rights are on a roll.

Although there are more guns on the street in the hands of law-abiding citizens than ever before, crime rates are at an all-time low, which seems to further prove that more guns do equal less crime.

What a difference ten years makes.
