Pro-Gun Punditry: Wednesday's Buckeye State Roundabout

By Chris Chumita

There are more stories pertaining to our gun rights in Ohio then we can possibly draw attention to with individual daily commentary. But they are all worthy of mention.

What follows is our review of headlines from around the state though a pro-gun rights lens.

From a stupid robber shooting himself with his own gun to more armed robberies in "gun free" zones, these articles should be a part of your required reading!

What follows is several days of headlines accompanied by short, concise pro-gun analysis.

4/20/09: Akron, Ohio: Suspected Robber Shot By Own Gun

From the article:

Akron police said a man was shot when his gun went off while he was attempting to rob a teenager.

Ahhh, the old "gun went off" myth... Thankfully, only the thug was hurt.

4/20/09: Columbus, Ohio: Suspect Allegedly Makes Off With UDF Cash

From the article:

When the clerk handed him the cigar, the suspect, with his hand in his pocket, indicated that he had a weapon, CPD said in a report.

He allegedly ordered the clerk to give him everything in the cash drawer and not to touch anything or try to call the police.

Yet another robbery in a gun free zone.

4/19/09: Cleveland, Ohio: Spike In East Side Gun Violence Has Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath Concerned

From the article:

A recent spike in gun violence in three East Side neighborhoods has Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath concerned about the summer months, when crime usually peaks.

How about you quit wasting resources by targeting law-abiding gun owners and go after the thugs?

4/15/09: Peoria, Illinois: Ill. Police Say Boy, 13, Used Handgun To Rob Bank

From the target:

A 13-year-old boy used a handgun to rob a Peoria bank before police caught him hiding in a nearby garage after a foot chase.

How could this have happened? Illinois has strict gun control laws, forbids concealed carry, and it is illegal for a 13-year old to have a gun. This incident is just more proof that gun control laws do not work.

4/13/09: Columbine, Colorado: 10 Years Later, The Real Story Behind Columbine

From the article:

The two teenagers who killed 13 people and themselves at suburban Denver's Columbine High School 10 years ago next week weren't in the "Trenchcoat Mafia," disaffected videogamers who wore cowboy dusters. The killings ignited a national debate over bullying, but the record now shows Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold hadn't been bullied — in fact, they had bragged in diaries about picking on freshmen and "fags."

Their rampage put schools on alert for "enemies lists" made by troubled students, but the enemies on their list had graduated from Columbine a year earlier. Contrary to early reports, Harris and Klebold weren't on antidepressant medication and didn't target jocks, blacks or Christians, police now say, citing the killers' journals and witness accounts. That story about a student being shot in the head after she said she believed in God? Never happened, the FBI says now.

A decade after Harris and Klebold made Columbine a synonym for rage, new information — including several books that analyze the tragedy through diaries, e-mails, appointment books, videotape, police affidavits and interviews with witnesses, friends and survivors — indicate that much of what the public has been told about the shootings is wrong.

This is yet another reason why we should not move to pass knee-jerk legislation in the immediate aftermath of an emotionally-charged event. Too much of what the media "knows" might never have happened.

4/13/09: Westlake, Ohio: Man Remains On Loose After Westlake Bank Robbery

From the article:

Justin M. Sumbry, 21, of Cleveland, is wanted in connection with the Fifth Third bank robbery and is a fugitive.

This could not have happened! Fifth Third Bank has a sign that says you bring guns into their banks. Couldn't the robbers read?
