Pro-Gun Punditry: Wednesday's Buckeye State Roundabout

By Chris Chumita

There are more stories pertaining to our gun rights in Ohio then we can possibly draw attention to with individual daily commentary. But they are all worthy of mention.

What follows is our review of headlines from around the state though a pro-gun rights lens.

From a school being locked down to an armed citizen being honored, these articles should be a part of your required reading!

What follows is several days of headlines accompanied by short, concise pro-gun analysis.

4/15/08: Brooklyn, Ohio: Lockdown Canceled In Local School District

From the article:

Brooklyn police said a lockdown order has been lifted at all city schools.

Another school had to be locked down due to a potential threat. When are we going to get serious about school security? It is time to allow the teachers and staff to legally arm themselves.

4/15/08: Lorain, Ohio: Lorain Officer Suspended

From the article:

Investigators found the guns during a recent drug investigation and then learned about Morales dumping them. His suspension will end June 25, Safety Director Phil Dore said.

The officer received nothing but a wrist slap for something that you and I would probably be sent to jail for. It makes you wonder what he was trying to hide by dumping the guns.

4/13/08: Akron, Ohio: Armed Robbers Threaten Party-Goers At Frat House

From the article:

Akron police have been busy dealing with several armed robberies in the area, targeting everything from businesses and homeowners to Akron University students.

Also from the article:

The men walked into the back door of the house on Thornton Street during a late-night party. "He looked at me and said, 'Hey we're not messing around.' He pointed the gun at my chest and proceeded to walk in," said sophomore Jon Boyajian.

It seems that home invasions are happening more often. Unfortunately, the students whom live in apartments and dorms on campus are unarmed due to our college campuses being "gun free zones."

4/9/08: Baltimore, Maryland: Teacher Says She Was Assaulted, Videotaped

From the article:

A local teacher said she was beaten by a student inside her classroom in an attack that was caught on camera.

Also from the article:

Berry said she was shocked by the response she received from the school's principal. "On one hand, she told me that she is sorry that this happened to me," Berry said. "But then she turned right around and told me that telling a student that I was going to defend myself was a trigger word. I triggered them."

This is getting out of hand. We have to give our teachers the right to defend themselves and their students. With mindsets like the principal's, it is no wonder that our children are becoming more violent and out of control. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with telling someone that you will defend yourself.

4/9/08: Cleveland, Ohio: 11-Year-Old Fatally Shot In Head After Brother Finds Gun

From the article:

Cleveland police said a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his 11-year-old sister after finding a gun in the closet.

Also from the article:

Officers learned that the 14-year-old brother was responsible for putting the weapon in the closet. He told police that he found the revolver along with a .22-caliber rifle behind an abandoned home in the area of East 118th Street and Buckeye Avenue.

This is a tragic example of why gun safety classes, like the NRA's "Eddie Eagle" program should be taught in every school. This whole incident could have been avoided if either child followed Eddie Eagle's simple instructions on what to do if you find a gun. Stop. Don't touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.

4/9/08: South Point, Ohio: Man Charged For Attack At Wal-Mart

From the article:

At 7:25 p.m. Sunday, a 29-year-old woman was the object of threatening actions by a knife-wielding man in the ladies restroom of the department store, according to a press release from Sheriff Tim Sexton.

This is why we you should carry your firearm. You never know when you might need it to defend your life!

4/6/08: Springfield, Ohio: Man Who Subdued Gunman In Double Homicide Honored

From the article:

Off duty at the time, Bragg was sitting on his Dayton porch last August when he heard shots fired, then saw two men in ski masks emerge from the Covault Market and Coin Laundry. Roger Covault, 70, and Robert T. Harris, 53, were shot and killed during the robbery.

Armed with courage and, as wing commander Col. Mike Roberts put it Sunday, "the hardware guaranteed by the Second Amendment," Bragg went into action.

Bragg is a true hero. This is another example of how legally armed citizens save lives.
