Self Defense Class Offered for LGBT Community

Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) has announced that they will conduct a free self-defense class for residents of Central Ohio.

Titled “Introduction to Self Defense with a Firearm,” the class will be open to everyone, including the LGBT community.

“We're saddened by the tragic murders in Orlando,” said Dean Rieck, Executive Director of BFA. “But we're also angry. While we still don't know all the details, our understanding is that apart from one off-duty police officer, it was illegal for anyone in the Pulse nightclub to carry a firearm for self-defense.

“News reports indicate that many people were trapped with no clear exit and no means of defending themselves. The advice in these situations is to run, hide, or fight. Unfortunately, in this given situation, many people had nowhere to run or hide. And they had no practical way to fight.”

The class will introduce attendees to basic topics such as developing a survival mindset, how firearms work, safety rules, equipment selection, how to get a concealed handgun license, etc. The class will be conducted in a safe, comfortable setting and there will be no shooting during this class.

The date and place will be determined based on the number of people who wish to attend, but BFA plans to use a Central Ohio location and conduct the class on a weekend.

Several experienced self-defense instructors will be available to answer questions or talk with attendees privately about their concerns.

Rieck says this has nothing to do with politics, but everything to do with having options for personal safety. “I know this is a hot button issue and people have widely different opinions about guns. But it is our view that no matter who you are, you should have the freedom to choose how to respond in a life-or-death situation.

“Some people are not comfortable with firearms. That's fine. But others, especially those in historically oppressed communities, may choose to respond more assertively. If so, we are here to help them learn more about practical means of self-defense so they can make an informed decision.”

Those interested in the class are asked to submit their first name and email address at bit.ly/DefenseIntro
