Woman confronted at her workplace by armed, estranged husband

The Akron Beacon Journal is reporting that Police arrested a Leetonia man on charges of kidnapping and carrying a concealed weapon Monday morning after he allegedly confronted his estranged wife as she was arriving for work in Cuyahoga Falls.

There were no serious injuries, but responding officers used a Taser to shock the man and take him into custody after he fled the scene, Cuyahoga Falls police Lt. Jeff Childers told the newspaper.

Childers identified the suspect as 26-year-old Chad R. Kaminski. According to the story, he also was charged with possession of a weapon while under felony indictment for a previous arrest.

Monday's incident, Childers told the paper, began shortly after 8 a.m. outside Eagle Elastomer Inc., 70 Cuyahoga Falls Industrial Parkway, as the suspect's estranged wife, 35-year-old Mary Kaminski of Kent, was arriving for work in a Ford Explorer.

Childers said Chad Kaminski, driving a 1992 Buick, cut her off and approached the passenger-side window of the Explorer. He asked to talk to her and she rolled down the window.

"He got in, and he said something to the effect: 'I wanted you to be the last person I see.' She got scared, wanted to get out of the car, and he grabbed her and wouldn't let her out,'' Childers was quoted as saying.

"Eventually, he pulled up his shirt, and there was a gun stuck in the waistband. She finally managed to get out and ran, and he ran after her,'' Childers told the Beacon-Journal.

Also from the story:

Chad Kaminski tried several times to grab her as she was running, Childers said, but he left the scene in his vehicle when witnesses tried to help the woman.

Childers said officers responding to the 911 call had a description of Kaminski's car, which had Pennsylvania license plates, and stopped it minutes later on Steels Corners Road.

An officer used a Taser to incapacitate the suspect and later found a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic handgun inside the car, Childers said.

Themes to this story the newspaper fails to address:

  • Is this woman's right to self-defense infringed upon by her employer? Most likely.
  • Did her employer do anything to protect her? No.
  • Shouldn't his behavior be illegal? It is. The gun control law prohibiting this man from even owning a gun failed this woman. The gun control laws prohibiting this man from carrying his illegally-owned gun concealed, and in a car, failed this woman.
  • Did this attacker have a CHL? He could not have qualified for one, because he wasn't even legally able to own a gun. Why no mention of the fact by the Akron Beacon Journal? Wasn't the Media Access Loophole supposed to be used to make certain the "wrong" people weren't getting licenses?
