Are You Registered To Vote?

By Chris Chumita

One of the things that make America great is that we can elect candidates to represent us, our morals, and our beliefs. Voting takes very little effort and may be one of the most important things we can do to support our Second Amendment rights. It is our opportunity to elect pro-gun candidates who in return will help pass pro-gun legislation.

This year we are fortunate to have several pro-gun candidates running and will not be forced to make a “lesser of two evils” decision when it comes to Second Amendment issues in many races.

The only way that we can ensure victory is to have a large turn out on Election Day. In order to do that, we must encourage every gun owner to vote. Those that are not yet registered to vote must be encouraged to take the time and become involved in the most basic function of the political process. It comes down to numbers; the side with the best turn out on Election Day wins. For the skeptics and naysayers that feel their vote will not make a difference, we only have to look back at the November 2004 election to see how important voter turn out really is.

The primary election this year will be held on May 2nd.

In order to vote in the primary, you MUST be registered to vote on or before April 3rd (30 days before the election). A little known fact is that a 17 year old can register and vote in the primary election if they will turn 18 by November 7th, 2006. This is an extremely important and overlooked provision and also a great opportunity to get our young people involved in the process.

In the State of Ohio, a person can register to vote at any of the following places:

  • Any County Board of Elections Office
  • Secretary of State’s Office
  • Any Public High School or Vocational School
  • Any Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles Office
  • At any offices of designated agencies that provides disability programs or public assistance
  • Any public library
  • Any County Treasurers’ Office
  • By mail

The Secretary of State’s web site (http://www.sos.state.oh.us/) is a great resource, and should answer all of your voting related questions. On the web site, a person can make an online request to have a voter registration form sent to them.

If you are unable to vote on May 2nd, you may be eligible for an Absentee ballot. For more information on Absentee Voting please refer to the Absentee Voting section of the Voting Information Guide found on the Secretary of state’s web site (http://www.sos.state.oh.us/).

Do your part to help protect our Second Amendment rights and vote for pro-gun candidates in the May primary. If you have not registered to vote, do it today.
