Poll: Gun owners have opportunity to shape impression of Bloomberg in Ohio

By Chad D. Baus

On July 12, the Hannah News Service reported on the latest Quinnipiac Poll, which found that 61% of Ohioans have no opinion of anti-gun New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and that his unfavorables are higher than favorables among the rest.

Ohio gun owners have an excellent opportunity to help inform their friends and neighbors about this anti-gun candidate before his threatened independent presidential campaign ever leaves the ground.

From the story:

The poll on the presidential race included Bloomberg in matchups with top Democratic and Republican candidates, and showed he could siphon votes from Republican front-runner Rudolph Giuliani.

..."Although Mayor Bloomberg is not that well-known in Ohio - 61 percent don't have an opinion of him and among the rest slightly more view him unfavorably than favorably - at this point he takes more votes from Republicans than he does from Democrats," Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement released with the poll.

The poll shows New York Sen. Hillary Clinton still in the lead of the Democratic pack, and defeating the equally anti-gun Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, 44 to 42 percent. The Hannah News Service story reports the poll found if Bloomberg is in the race, Clinton leads Giuliani 40 to 35 percent. In a May poll, Giuliani led 47 to 43 percent.

The story goes on to note that Clinton still leads the anti-gun Democratic primary pack with 35 percent, followed by Barack Hussein Obama (who recently called for the failed Clinton Gun Ban to be reinstated) with 17 percent, former vice presidential candidate John Edwards with 13 percent, and former Vice President Al Gore (who has not declared a candidacy) with 12 percent. Cleveland Congressman Dennis Kucinich received three percent. Clinton's lead fell from a poll released in June when she was at 40 percent, while Obama's numbers rose from 12 percent in June.

In the Republican field, Giuliani has 24 percent to Arizona Sen. John McCain's 14 percent. McCain, who recently parted ways with some of the top advisors on his campaign, has decreased steadily each poll since getting 22 percent in January.

Former Senator Fred Thompson, who has not yet declared himself a candidate for President, is polling at an extraordinary 18 percent among Republicans, indicating just how unhappy the base is with the current crop of anti-gun GOP candidates.

The poll surveyed 1,447 Ohio voters from July 3-9, including 499 Republicans and 531 Democrats, and has a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points.
