CNSNews.com Readers: Publishing Names of CCW License Holders Irresponsible
By Chad D. Baus
Cybercast News Service's coverage of the privacy-invading actions by The Sandusky Register, and the response by gun rights groups in Ohio, has shined a national spotlight on this problem.
CNSNews.com has now published a series of excellent letters written in response to their initial coverage.

Following are a series of letters originally published at CNSNews.com:
- “The most serious outcome of this outrageous publishing of gun owners’ names and addresses is the 'road map' this provides criminals who now know where to break in and steal weapons. Easily traceable stolen registered firearms that result in crime from this article could perhaps result in Matt Westerhold, the publisher, being indicted as an accomplice to any resultant felonies. Perhaps a bit more thought could have been used before this list was published. Westerhold has probably opened himself up to at least 2,700 individual lawsuits. I wonder what his next job will be.” (‘Ohio Newspaper Under Fire for Outing Gun Owners,’ July 5)

“Why not publish the names of those convicted of drunk driving or registered sex offenders? These are just as much in the public eye as concealed carry permit holders. …”
Richard H.

“Same old radical left-wing liberal press.”
Byron M.

“One of the most dangerous situations in the Roanoke Times releasing the names of concealed carry permit holders in Virginia is that the newspaper published the names of police and undercover officers, putting their lives and family members in jeopardy.”
William V.
Charlottesville, VA
“Ask a burglar which is worse – being on the published list or not being on it. …”
Maudie M.
Mandeville, LA
Communications continue to be received by Buckeye Firearms Association in relation to this ongoing travesty.
One letter-writter (sarcastically?) inquired if the ACLU would soon be filing a lawsuit against The Register, since just last week the liberal organization filed suit in San Diego County Superior Court to block the city from
releasing the names, addresses and phone numbers of people who have
registered to hire day laborers, arguing that the information might be used by anti-illegal immigration
activists to harass people who hire day laborers.
Given a history that includes ignoring bans on CHL-holders in public parks while defending the rights of sex offenders to go where the kids are, I won't hold my breath.
