OSU to Students: How to Protect Yourself Against the Serial Rapist

The Ohio State University may have won the fight against Michigan on the field Saturday, but they STILL haven't won the fight against the Buckeye Campus-area Rapist, who has been victimizing female OSU students at will since mid-summer.

University Police Chief Ron Michalec has said he is "not in favor of people walking around with a concealed weapon. The police are here to protect. That is what people should rely on."

But by their own admission, and after nearly five months, university officials' efforts to protect OSU's female students have failed.

According to an email received from campus officials and forwarded to the PAC by a concerned OSU student, "the university, working with city and campus police, has issued several crime alerts urging all area residents to follow basic safety advice" over the past few months. In spite of these safety alerts, "a rapist and burglar operating in the campus area has attacked several young women in their campus area apartments and homes
during the past few months."

UNIVERSITY URGES CAUTION, SAFETY IN LIGHT OF RAPIST

11/6/02 -- A rapist and burglar operating in the campus area has attacked several young women in their campus area apartments and homes during the past few months, and the university, working with city and campus police, has issued several crime alerts urging all area residents to follow basic safety advice. Among the precautions that students should take at all times are to lock their windows and doors, do not open the door to anyone you don't personally know, report suspicious activity to police, avoid walking alone, and avoid poorly lit, less traveled areas. Other information about the rapist and additional safety tips are available online.

Commentary by Chad D. Baus:

OFCC began reporting on this story way back in August, and imemdiately issued a call for the campus to reverse it's position on the legal right to carry for college students.

OFCC was also one of the first to report on fliers posted at OSU by FreeOhio, suggesting that students use Second Amendment rights to defend themselves against the serial rapist. The NRA recently picked up on this story, and published it in the December America's First Freedom member magazine.

Interested persons may submit polite advice on better ways to allow students to protect themselves from this website.
