Pro-Gun Punditry: Wednesday's Buckeye State Roundabout

By Chris Chumita

There are more stories pertaining to our gun rights in Ohio then we can possibly draw attention to with individual daily commentary. But they are all worthy of mention.

What follows is our review of headlines from around the state though a pro-gun rights lens.

From the crime rate in Cleveland to the NRA intervening in Cleveland's lawsuit over HB 347, these articles should be a part of your required reading!

Click on the "Read More..." link below for several days of headlines accompanied by short, concise pro-gun analysis.

6/5/07: Cleveland, Ohio: Burglaries, Robberies Rose Last Year

From the article:

Burglaries and robberies increased by more than 10 percent in Cleveland from 2005 to 2006.

But major crimes overall, including burglaries and robberies, are down nearly the same amount so far this year, and Cleveland police are hoping a crime-fighting computer program will help them make the city safer.

Try telling the people who live in Cleveland (like myself) that crime is starting to decrease in the city. It sure doesn't seem like it!

6/5/07: Logan, Ohio: Black Bears Spotted

From the article:

In the last month, a black bear (an endangered species animal) has been sighted twice in Hocking County.

Yet another reason why it was important to allow hunters to carry concealed handguns while hunting.

6/4/07: Cleveland, Ohio: Police: Man Shot 3 Times During Carjacking

From the article:

Cleveland police said a man was shot three times during a carjacking Monday.

Another incident of violent crime in Cleveland. When will Cleveland stop their attack on legal gun owners and focus their attention on the violent criminals who are taking over?

6/2/07: Columbus, Ohio: String Of Attacks Has Short North, Campus On Alert

From the article:

Police are warning residents of the Short North and South Campus areas after a recent string of robberies and sexual assaults against women.

Columbus police issued the alert yesterday in response to five attacks in 11 days.

Also from the article:

The suspect is accused of sexually assaulting two of the women. In two incidents, the victims were not alone when they were approached.

Once again, students are being victimized and are unable to carry a firearm for self-defense. When will people learn that "gun-free zones" such as college campuses, only make it safer for the criminal?

6/2/07: National: Crime-Fighting Teams Take On 4 New Cities

From the article:

Washington- A violent- crime spike in four cities led the Justice Department on Friday to dispatch additional teams of federal agents to combat guns, gangs or surging murder rates in Mesa, Ariz.; Orlando, Fla.; San Bernardino, Calif.; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The four-city push comes as the FBI is expected to report a 1.3 percent rise in violent crime nationwide in 2006 - an increase for the second straight year.

I bet it won't take long for the gun-grabbers to start blaming law-abiding gun owners for the increase in crime.

6/1/07: Akron, Ohio: Akron Man With Concealed Gun Shoots At Robbers

From the article:

Owens tried to run, but the robber grabbed his arm. Owens broke free, pulled out his own gun and fired one shot, missing the teens, who took off running.

Thanks to a concealed handgun, another life is saved!

5/30/07: Stratford, Connecticut: Officer Shoots Daughter Mistaken For Intruder

From the article:

Her father, 41-year-old Eric Scott, was awakened by motion sensor lights in his back yard and when he went to investigate found the basement door unlocked. He then saw someone in a basement bathroom and fired his service pistol, hitting his daughter in the knee. Her wounds are not considered life-threatening.

This should be a lesson for all gun owners. Remember, you should always know what your target is before firing!

5/31/07: Cleveland, Ohio: Cleveland's Gun Lawsuit Draws NRA Fire

From the article:

The NRA reported Wednesday that it intervened in a lawsuit that Cleveland filed against the state in March in an attempt to overturn the law.

"We have joined in this lawsuit as a defendant-intervenor to protect law-abiding gun owners in Ohio from harassment by an unreasonable and confusing patchwork of municipal gun laws," NRA chief lobbyist Chris W. Cox said in a statement.

It is great to see that the NRA is helping fight the City of Cleveland and their attempt to infringe upon our Second Amendment rights.
