Pro-Gun Punditry: Wednesday's Buckeye State Roundabout

By Chris Chumita

There are more stories pertaining to our gun rights in Ohio then we can possibly draw attention to with individual daily commentary. But they are all worthy of mention.

What follows is our review of headlines from around the state though a pro-gun rights lens.

From a worthless protection order to students getting robbed, these articles should be a part of your required reading!

What follows is several days of headlines accompanied by short, concise pro-gun analysis.

2/5/08: Fairfield County, Ohio: Wife Feared Murder-Suicide

From the article:

He acted violently when she said she wanted a divorce, and she feared for her safety, the protection order said. Several times, he threatened to commit suicide and gave his wife the impression he'd take her with him.

A protection order is just a worthless piece of paper and offers no real protection. This is exactly why it should be mandatory that a temporary emergency handgun license should be offered to anyone who requests a protection order.

2/4/08: Chardon Township, Ohio: Man Chased Burglar From His Chardon Township Home

From the article:

A Chardon Township couple awoke to a nightmare. There was a man standing in their bedroom.

The husband, a father of three, chased the intruder outside and tried to tackle him, but couldn't hold on. The burglar got away, but was arrested a short while later.

Home invasions can happen anywhere, even in safe neighborhoods like Chardon Township. That is why we have to be able to own firearms to protect our homes from people who invade it.

2/3/08: Tinley Park, Illinois: Illinois Cops Hunt Gunman Who Killed 5

From the article:

A massive manhunt was under way Sunday for a gunman who killed five women in the back room of a suburban Chicago clothing store during a botched robbery attempt.

A man was seen leaving the Lane Bryant on Saturday morning before police found the store's manager and four customers shot to death. Authorities have released few details about the brazen killings in the busy shopping center.

Illinois is one of two states where there is no way of obtaining a concealed handgun license. This incident shows how the lack of a CCW law disarmed the law-abiding and left them defenseless against a violent offender(s).

2/2/08: Orange, Ohio: School Activities To Resume Monday After Getting Threat

From the article:

Orange Schools will reopen Monday after weekend activities were canceled because of a security threat.

Pepper Pike and Moreland Hills Police Departments, the Orange Schools Incident Command Team and Western Reserve Internet Service said the threat was resolved.

Here is another example of how vulnerable our schools are.

2/1/08: Cleveland, Ohio: Principal Injured Trying To Break Up Fight Between Students

From the article:

Cleveland school officials said an elementary school principal suffered a broken leg Friday while trying to break up a fight between two students.

If I am not mistaken, this is the FIFTH teacher or school employee that has been injured by students in the past few weeks. At this rate, arming Cleveland teachers would not be enough, they may need their own SWAT team.

2/1/08: Hamilton, Ohio: Schools Locked Down After Prisoner Escapes Transport Van

From the article:

Police said a prisoner escaped from a transport van Friday morning in downtown Hamilton.

Also from the article:

Two elementary schools were locked down in the southwest Ohio city while police search for the suspect.

Ohio's "criminal empowerment" laws would have ensured that the teachers and staff were unable to adequately protect the students if someone ever broke through the locked doors.

1/31/08: Bexley, Ohio: Students Robbed At Gunpoint

From the article:

Police were searching for the person who robbed two Capital University students at gunpoint on Tuesday.

The women pulled up to the ATM at the Fifth Third Bank, located on East Main Street, at about 7 p.m. when a man with a gun approached them, 10TV News reported.

Fifth Third Bank and Capitol University are both "Gun Free Zones," but that did not stop the violent criminal from robbing the students at gun point. "Gun Free Zones" only disarm the law-abiding!
