Another “No Guns” Sign Comes Down

By Chris Chumita

One of the biggest complaints that Ohio concealed handgun license (CHL) holders have about Ohio’s CCW law, is the amount of businesses that are WILLINGLY forbidding concealed carry in their establishment by posting the infamous “No Guns” sign.

Often the signs are not posted due to distain for gun owners or a hatred of the Second Amendment. It is often posted due to lack of knowledge of the law, or that the store owner has been misinformed that they are required to post. One example is the Novak J F Company in Cleveland, Ohio.

I stopped in this store to pick up a preordered name tag for work last Monday. Upon entering the store, I noticed the “No Guns” sign posted on the door. Within a few minutes I was talking to one of the clerks about the sign.

The clerk stated that they were told that they were required by law to post the “No Guns“ sign over a year ago, but could not remember by who. The clerk did not appear to have any anti-gun bias and did not understand Ohio’s concealed carry law.

At that point, I discussed the law with her and determined that there was no legal requirement to post. I also discussed the dangers that come with posting the signs, and the illusion of safety that “gun-free zones” create. After a few minutes of conversation, the clerk agreed to remove the sign. In fact, it was removed as I left the store with my name tag.

As a result of our discussion, there is now one less posted business in Ohio. However, there are many more businesses that are willingly posting signs that forbid law-abiding citizens from carrying concealed handguns. This is where you come in.

Ask to speak to the manager whenever you see a business that is not required by law, but is WILLINGLY posting a "No Guns" sign. Ask them why they chose to post their property, and then point out the dangers of forbidding law-abiding citizens from carrying concealed handguns into their establishment. Explain to them that so called “gun-free zones” only disarm the law-abiding and actually make it safer for the criminal.

Also, inform them that you will not do business with them until the sign is removed. You will be surprised at how many businesses will actually remove their signs if you calmly and rationally discuss it with them.

It may not seem like much, but getting a business to remove a sign is definitely a victory in our fight to restore our Second Amendment rights!
