2 new BFA-backed bills address suppressors, as outlined in 'One Big Beautiful Bill'

Two identical bills have been introduced in the Ohio General Assembly, aimed at modifying state laws regarding firearm suppressors and mufflers in relation to the National Firearms Act of 1934.

At the federal level, H.R.1 — dubbed President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" — seeks to entirely remove suppressors from NFA regulations. The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed the bill, but its fate in the U.S. Senate remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, Ohio House Bill 331 and Ohio Senate Bill 214 propose revisions to the Ohio Revised Code, eliminating suppressors and mufflers from the definition of dangerous ordnance and removing language that mandates suppressor registration under the NFA.

Both bills, titled "Remove firearm mufflers, suppressors as dangerous ordnance," aim to streamline state regulations.

HB 331 is sponsored by Reps. Kellie Deeter (R-Norwalk) and Tex Fischer (R-Boardman).

SB 214 was introduced by Sen. Kyle Koehler (R-Springfield).

Dean Rieck, Buckeye Firearms Association executive director, said he was pleased to see lawmakers being proactive for the benefit of all law-abiding gun owners in Ohio.

"Many of our supporters have contacted us about state-level regulation of suppressors," Rieck said. "And we're pleased to say we're getting ahead of this issue. We are working with sponsors of both bills to make sure that if the big, beautiful bill passes at the federal level, we'll be able to move forward with fixes to the Ohio Revised Code to make suppressors legal without taxes, registration, or additional red tape."

SB 214 was referred to the Senate Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee on June 4, with a first hearing slated June 11.
