Pro-Gun Punditry: Wednesday's Buckeye State Roundabout

By Chris Chumita

There are more stories pertaining to our gun rights in Ohio then we can possibly draw attention to with individual daily commentary. But they are all worthy of mention.

What follows is our review of headlines from around the state though a pro-gun rights lens.

From a girl being told to stop calling 911 before she was murdered to another gun buyback program, these articles should be a part of your required reading!

What follows is several days of headlines accompanied by short, concise pro-gun analysis.

2/18/08: Deland, Florida: Mom: Police Told Daughter To Stop Calling Before Murder-Suicide

From the article:

A Central Florida woman whose 17-year-old daughter was killed in a murder-suicide apparently committed by her ex-boyfriend said the teen was told by police to stop calling for help or she'd be arrested.

Police said Clay Coffner shot his estranged girlfriend, Natasha Hall, in the head outside her DeLand home Friday before turning the gun on himself.

This is a tragic example of how we cannot depend on the police to protect us.

2/17/08: Statewide: Gun-Permit Renewals Near

From the article:

The numbers suggest that one in every 80 adults you pass on the street is carrying a hidden handgun, or at least a permit to carry one.

Four years after law-abiding Ohioans were given the explicit right to carry handguns, the first permits are set to expire in coming months. The permit process began on April 8, 2004.

This is a great article! After reading the quotes by Toby Hoover, you will see how out of touch with reality she is.

2/16/08: Cleveland, Ohio: Three Wounded In Flats Club Shooting

From the article:

The men said they were leaving the club when another man outside the bar just started shooting.

Yet another shooting in a gun free zone.

2/15/08: Cleveland, Ohio: CSU Tops For Campus Muggings, Akron For Weapons Charges

From the article:

The University of Akron had the most arrests for illegal weapons on campus, when compared to student numbers.

Nearly one in every 200 at Ohio State University has his or her home or dorm room burglarized.

When it comes to robberies and muggings, Cleveland State tops the list.

As for rape reports, Ohio State's numbers are significantly higher.

By disarming the students and staff, our universities have become criminal protection zones.

2/14/08: Akron, Ohio: Akron Cabbie Robbed

From the article:

A 32-year-old Akron cab driver was robbed of an undetermined amount of cash at 2:40 a.m. today, police said.

Thankfully, the cab driver was not hurt or killed. This incident is another example of the need for law-abiding citizens to carry handguns for protection.

2/13/08: Cleveland, Ohio: Man Fatally Shot On Superior Avenue Last Night

From the article:

A 26-year-old Cleveland man was shot at 10:20 last night, while talking with another man in the parking lot at Superior Pizza in the 10500 block of Superior Avenue.

More violence in the city that prefers targeting law-abiding gun owners instead of real criminals.

2/13/08: Marysville, Ohio: Police: Officer Accidentally Shoots, Kills Son

From the article:

Authorities said an auxiliary police officer accidentally shot and killed his son as the two were examining a sniper rifle at their central Ohio home.

This is a tragic example of what can happen whenever we do not obey the basic rules of gun safety.

2/13/08: Cleveland, Ohio: Principal Valerie Flowers Has Idea For Getting Guns Away From Kids

From the article:

She asked her seventh- and eighth-graders how many of them knew where to get a gun. Almost three-fourths of them raised their hands. A fourth of them admitted that they had held a gun or shot one. They told her they could buy a .38 for $40. If they don't have money, they can trade jewelry, sneakers, drugs or designer clothes.

Also from the article:

She needs donations for a citywide gun buyback program for kids. Her solution would get guns out of their hands immediately and anonymously. She wants a program in which kids can trade in guns for gift cards.

She wants the city to choose a safe location, a church or social service agency in each police district as a drop-off place with no questions asked. In return, the child gets a gift card to McDonald's, FootLocker, Wal-Mart and the like.

What a stupid idea! This gives kids an opportunity to dump a gun that they used in crime with no questions asked, and then gives them something to trade for a new gun.
