Ted Strickland says Heller author's death "came at a good time"

Audio has been uncovered of former Ohio governor Ted Strickland saying that the death of United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia - author of the Heller decision affirming the individual Constitutional right to bear arms - "came at a good time," all to the applause and laughter of his audience.

An audio recording of the remarks, made at an AFL-CIO rally in Cleveland, have been released on YouTube.

"I mean, the death of Scalia saved labor from a terrible decision," Strickland said, as his audience clapped and laughed.

"I don't wish anyone ill, but it happened at a good time..." Strickland continued.

Because there's no video, one cannot see his expression, but it's pretty clear his audience understood the statement about not wishing anyone ill was not genuine, as they immediately broke into yet another round of laughter.

The audio can be heard here:

Strickland's insensitive remarks come on the heels of yet another video surfacing recently, which reveal Strickland saying that his work as president of the anti-gun rights group Center for American Progress (CAP) was his "dream job."

In the video, Strickland can also be heard bragging that CAP, which supports national regulation of concealed carry licenses, monthly background checks for permit-holders and reckless lawsuits that would put American gun manufacturers out of business, "paid me more money than I've ever made in my life."

Back in February, Strickland admitted to the Cleveland Plain Dealer editorial board that his record on gun control is "mixed and spotty."

The post recent Quinnipiac University poll of three swing states shows U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) opening up a nine-point lead on anti-gun rights Democrat Ted Strickland.

According to the poll, which I believe can be laid squarely at the feet of his decision to abandon gun owners, Sen. Portman leads Mr. Strickland 49% - 40%. His margin was seven points In June. Earlier in the year, Quinnipiac’s survey found the pair were locked in a dead heat, and last year, Mr. Portman trailed by as much as nine points.

Judging by the emails he is sending supporters, with subject lines like "Wish I had better news" and "Down by 5 points (please help)," the poll crash has Strickland's campaign in a tailspin.
