The Threat Of The “Invisible” Gun

The anti-gun media is at it again. It seems that they are starting another scare campaign about “invisible” or “almost invisible” guns that are “hard to detect” by airport security scanners. It reminds me of all of the misinformation that the media published a few years ago about “plastic Glocks” being able to pass through airport security without setting off metal detectors. Do I even have to mention all of the “porcelain Glock” hype that started after they were mentioned in the movie, “Die Hard 2?”
It was recently reported by WBNC that the police recovered a Professional Ordnance Carbon-15 Type-97 pistol in Newark, New Jersey. The short news story is a perfect example of the media’s anti-gun bias.

The first sentence tells you exactly where the story is going to go. It states, “A pistol found in the car of a drug suspect arrested recently in Newark was made of plastic, so it may pass through a security scan unnoticed.”
The Professional Ordnance Carbon-15 Type-97 and all other polymer guns are not entirely made of plastic. At the bare minimum, the barrel, and its internal parts are made of metal. Obviously, the metal parts would set off the security scanners.
The story goes on to explain that Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura took the gun to the airport and tested it in the security scanner. Fontoura felt that the gun did not look like a weapon, because only the barrel was visible.
There is nothing about the Professional Ordnance Carbon-15 Type-97 that makes it harder to detect than other polymer guns. Maybe Fontoura should leave the baggage screening to the professionals.
Towards the end of the article, it attempts to demonize the caliber that the Professional Ordnance Carbon-15 Type-97 fires, the .223. In the article, it states, “The one found in Newark fires a .223-caliber ammunition so fast it can penetrate a bulletproof vest.” Unfortunately the article does not stop there. In reference to the .223, Fontoura stated “That’s the ammunition we’re using in Iraq.”
The article does not mention that the .223 is a widely used hunting round, and most calibers fired from high powered rifles will penetrate a “bullet proof vest.” Without mentioning all of the facts, it seems to be trying to pass the .223 round off as being extra deadly.
Hopefully, this article is not the harbinger of another scare campaign started by the media. Whenever we see it, we must expose the media’s antigun bias.

Professor John R. Lott Jr. points out in his book, The Bias Against Guns that there is either a concerted effort to shape the gun debate by the establishment media or gross negligence on their part.
