Anti-gun bias on display at News Channel 5, Cleveland's ABC affiliate

By Chris Chumita

When you watch the news, you are supposed to be watching a factual and unbiased reporting of the news. However, that is often not the case and it is especially true when it comes to guns.

Many examples of the media's anti-gun bias have been documented by this and other pro-gun groups, as well as by authors such as John R. Lott and Bernie Goldberg, and John Stossel. One of the most prominent examples offered is how the vast majority of news oulets failed to report that the shooter at the Appalachian Law School were stopped by students with guns. More common examples include television news showing images of guns behind talking heads discussing violent crimes (which may or many not have even involved a gun), or running stock footage of a person shooting a fully automatic "assault rifle" while the story they are covering actually involves a semi-automatic rifle. These are just a few of the types of examples of bias in the media against guns.

But it is another level of bias entirely when a man with a bomb is referred to as a "gunman". And that is just what a Cleveland ABC affiliate did about the deranged man who recently took hostages at a New Hampshire Hillary Clinton campaign headquarters...

On November 30th, 2007, Cleveland's News Channel 5 kept referring to the Clinton H.Q. hostage taker as an "armed" man or as a "gunman" on their website - this despite the fact that no media outlet was mentioning that he had a gun. Even News Channel 5's own story, entitled "Gunman Releases Two Clinton Staffers", did not mention a gun, but did state that he had what appeared to be an explosive device strapped to his body. If that is just not a perfect example of the media's antigun bias, then I don't know what is.
