Sheriff: Butler County schools to have armed substitute teacher

The Dayton Daily News is reporting that Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones has announced a retired officer will serve in Butler County schools as an armed substitute teacher.

"It is basically a two-for-one," Jones said.

The man sworn in this afternoon is Scott Miller, a retired Mason police officer. Miller was not employed as a teacher but is now trained as a substitute teacher.

Miller retired after being injured.

Jones called the announcement a "fresh idea, outside-the-box proposal" aimed at having armed personnel in schools. He said he hopes the idea will be accepted as something easily applied throughout Ohio and the nation.

This is the second decision by an Ohio school system to publicly announce a plan to arm school personnel. William's County's Montpelier schools made the announcement last week.

Other schools have also made the decision to arm school personnel, but have chosen to keep their security plans confidential. Yesterday, Cleveland's NBC affiliate, WEWS, chose to ignore Orrville City Schools' concerns about security, and published the name and photograph of a science teacher who has been given the permission to go armed at school.
