Deadly in Dayton: Gun control laws' failure displayed

After reading these headlines from TWO DAYS in the Dayton Daily News, it appears the next Senate President, Jeff Jacobson, calls a very dangerous place home.

We hope Sen. Jacobson is ready to lead the charge on making corrections to Ohio's concealed carry reform law, which was severely corrupted at the hand of Governor Taft, and a few term-limited Senators. He is expected to take the position when the Republican caucus votes in early 2005.

As these headlines show, the Senate and Taft should have been focusing on what criminals are doing with guns, instead of on finding ways to discriminate against law-abiding, defenseless Ohioans:

Man shot in doorway of home
Police were looking for two suspects who shot a man multiple times Wednesday as he stood in his home's front doorway.

Officers dispatched to a residence in the 2600 block of North Gettysburg Avenue about 9:50 p.m. found a 52-year-old man suffering from at least three gunshot wounds to his stomach, Lt. Robert Mannix said. The man was in critical condition at a hospital.

The shooters walked up to the front porch, knocked on the door and asked for someone the victim didn't know. He told police he felt funny about the men and tried to shut the glass door when both began firing, Mannix said.

Oakwood resident stabbed three times
An Oakwood man apparently was followed home early Monday and stabbed three times by would-be robbers who jumped him in his back yard, police said.

The victim, who was not identified, is in good condition at Miami Valley Hospital, Capt. Walt Conroy said. The victim dialed 911 from behind his residence in the 400 block of Irving Avenue at 2:36 a.m. He told police he was walking through his yard after leaving his van when two men in their 20s knocked him to the ground.

Conroy said the attack appears to have been random with robbery as a motive.

Man shot at VFW post
Police were looking for as many as two men suspected in a shooting Monday that sent one man to an area hospital, fighting for his life.

The victim was shot inside the Sherman Dudley VFW Post 3808, 3200 W. Third St. near South Moss Avenue, Lt. John Bardun said.

Police received a call about 9:24 p.m. regarding a disturbance at the establishment, Bardun said. Police received a second call at 9:33 p.m. to report that at least seven shots had been fired and sent patrons running from the building, Bardun said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries caused by a semi-automatic handgun, Bardun said.

Suspect shot in abduction case
Police are seeking Mark A. Brown in the abduction and robbery of a woman March 8.

The woman was forced from her home in her vehicle and was injured after jumping from the moving vehicle, police said. She suffered broken ribs and had to have her spleen removed.

Man wounded in VA center shooting
A Trotwood man was shot by a police officer Wednesday after police say he pulled a gun on a nurse at the Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The nurse also was wounded in the shooting, but her injuries were not serious, the center said.

Patrick Gregory Power, 37, of Trotwood was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
