Will Taft use a litmus test for high court nominee?

On March 31, we reported that some lawmakers are pressuring Gov. Taft to consider race when replacing Justice Deborah Cook on high court. Taft spokesman Orest Holubec said the administration has actively sought minority applicants.

But will Gov. Taft use anything other than qualifications to make his decision? John Holschuh, president of the Cincinnati Bar Association, thinks so.

"The seat will almost certainly be filled by a candidate who shares Taft's beliefs," said Holschuh.

"He's probably going to want someone who is aligned with his political thoughts and his ideology," Holschuh said.

We can only hope that Mr. Holschuh's analysis is wrong, because from what concealed carry reform supporters (and his party leaders in the House and Senate) know of Bob Taft's ideology and political thoughts, there is a lot left to be desired.

OFCC PAC will continue to keep a close eye on this developing issue, as Gov.Taft's appointment could shift the court away from the constitutionalist majority which was voted in by Ohioans in last fall's elections.
