2006 – The year in review

By Jim Irvine As we sit here enjoying the holiday season, we can’t help but reflect on the year past. It has been a fun and challenging one for Buckeye Firearms Association, filled with tremendous growth. But the overall feeling would have to be “satisfied.” HB347 will become law over the Governor’s imprudent veto.

Ohio Game & Fish Mag: Our Finest November Duck Hunts

For those who enjoy brushing up on their knowledge of hunting, writer Tom Behrens has written an extremely informative article in Ohio Fish and Game magazine. From the article: The single most important factor in waterfowl hunting is the weather. Last year, waterfowl hunting in northeast Ohio started out great, but then fell off when the weather stayed unseasonably mild and no new birds migrated...

SIGNED: General Assembly's first attempt at Media Access Loophole fix

Taft concern for Home Rule evaporates; HB9 signed into law By Chad D. Baus In a surprisingly brief article (especially given how hard the media has pushed for this bill for the past two years), the Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that Governor Taft has signed House Bill 9 into law. From the story: Substitute House Bill 9 requires that all public officials or their designees attend training...

Passage of Ohio's CCW Law reform was past due

The following commentary was recently published in the Wilmington News Journal. By Tim Inwood Back in September I wrote a guest editorial about the Sixth District Court ruling in the Bruce Beatty case. The ruling concerned the city of Toledo prosecuting Bruce Beatty for carrying a firearm in a municipal park. Toledo had prohibited carrying handguns in parks despite the fact the State Attorney...

What Are You Listening To?

By Chris Chumita It was not that long ago that the liberal media had total control. The anti-gun and anti-freedom organizations had free reign to use the radio and television to spew their propaganda. Pro-gun and freedom organizations were forced to use less effective means to communicate such as mass mailing and newsletters. During those dark times, pro-gun and pro-freedom editorials and stories...

Forces of gun prohibition on the march again…

...and in dire need of a history lesson By Tim Inwood Since the elections on November 7th I have been watching the news coverage carefully and what I see chills me. The forces that want to eventually ban gun ownership have been very frustrated under Republican rule in Washington D.C. since January 1995. The past two years since the expiration of the Clinton Semi-automatic Firearms ban has...

The season for giving - to your favorite pro-gun organizations!

As the year draws to a close, may of us make year end donations. We donate to our church or charities that do good work throughout the year. For those who itemize their Federal tax return, it’s also a way to lower the tax bill. We have compiled a few organizations that you might want to include in your year-end donations. Not all of these are deductible under IRS rules. Click 'Read More' to...

Merry Christmas!

Everyone at Buckeye Firearms Association wishes you and yours a very merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or Season’s greetings. Our best gift is the friendship and support given by each of you throughout the year. As we reflect on the year’s passing, we count our...

Buckeye Firearms Assoc. Leaders evaluate policy for Strickland transition

The Xenia Gazette recently published a story noting that Governor-Elect Ted Strickland is using the remaining time in 2006 preparing to take office in January, and that a Greene County local (and Buckeye Firearms Association region Leader) is contributing to the transition. From the story: Strickland-Fisher transition teams have been set up to evaluate current policy in 14 areas from education to...

My Apprentice License hunting success story

By Chad D. Baus Count me among the more than ten thousand Ohioans who took to the field for deer-gun season for the first time this year using an Ohio Apprentice Hunting License. And count me among those who are already planning to make many trips back in my life! I didn't grow up hunting, or shooting. When I was introduced to shooting by my late father-in-law, who suffered from Parkinson's...

Wayne LaPierre: Call A Crook a Crook

December 18, 2006 NRANews.com There's someone out there telling folks to buy guns illegally, and I think it's time we put a stop to it. He's directing contract employees to walk into gun stores, lie on the paperwork about who's buying the gun, and walk out after making a straw purchase. Even worse, he's bragging about what he's doing. He's holding press conferences to tell the world about what he...

Pro-Gun Punditry: Wednesday's Buckeye State Roundabout

By Chris Chumita There are more stories pertaining to our gun rights in Ohio then we can possibly draw attention to with individual daily commentary. But they are worthy of mention. What follows is our review of headlines from around the state though a pro-gun rights lens. From "shooting ads" to closing the "police gun loophole", these articles should be a part of your required reading! Click on...

LTEs: State lawmakers are doing right by all Ohioans

December 16, 2006 Cleveland Plain Dealer I disagree with The Plain Dealer editorial board's view that local governments should be able to impose gun-control ordinances. Section 1.04 of the Ohio Constitution guarantees Ohioans' right to bear arms. Why should the residents of big cities like Cleveland and Columbus enjoy this right any less than other Ohioans? Do we expect them to be less law...

D.C. handgun ban facing challenge, national implications bear on 2nd Am.

By Tim Inwood In 1976, Washington D.C. passed a draconian law banning the possession of handguns. Today, there are hopes a lawsuit ( Shelly Parker et al v. District of Columbia ) may bring an end to this era of stupidity. The D.C. law bans all handguns that were not registered with the city prior to September 24th, 1976. This law also applies to ammunition, and a special license to have "...

Ohio House concurs with Senate amendments to HB9; Act heads to Gov. Taft

By Chad D. Baus It's getting tougher and tougher to know what to believe when the Ohio media writes about legislative action in Columbus. On Friday, December 15, the Associated Press put out a wire service report entitled "Public records bill clears Legislature". The story, which was subsequently picked up by several Ohio news outlets, said in part: A bill mandating public-records training for...

Plain Dealer overlooks HB9 in calls for Home Rule-inspired vetos

By Chad D. Baus The Cleveland Plain Dealer editorial page is at it again, writing about legislation we have good reason to believe they've never read. This time, in addition to even more blather about why having one set of rules in the State of Ohio for gun owners is a bad idea, they're whining about legislation which would regulate the use of privacy-invading cameras that are used to find...

Hanson does Blackwater USA: DAY 2

Buckeye Firearms Association Legislative Chair Ken Hanson recently attend Blackwater USA ’s 5 day pistol/carbine class. While attending class, Ken kept a blog of his experiences. Veto Over-ride And The Big City Mayors

Editor's Note: The following op-ed is written in response to this Dayton Daily News story entitled "Officials decry gun law, home-rule threat" By Larry S. Moore Mayor McLin and other big-city Ohio mayors are experiencing angst over the recent over ride of Governor Taft’s veto of HB 347. They are spewing forth venom at the legislators and gun owners while spreading dis-information to the public...

A look back at the Alrosa murders, from someone who was there

By Linda Walker Dec. 8, 2004 is a date that is emblazoned, in the minds of many central Ohio individuals, as the night that the Alrosa Villa nightclub came under attack by a deranged man by the name of Nathan Gale. Several people died that night as the metal band Damageplan took to the stage. Gale had stalked Daryl "Dimebag" Abbott for several months, supposedly because he was upset that Abbott's...

Senate passes HB 9, attempts to clean up media access loophole

By Chad D. Baus Little noticed after the first veto-override in more than a quarter-century was Senate passage of House Bill 9, the public records bill, which contains an attempt by the legislature to clarify its intent for giving journalists access to records of concealed handgun license-holders. On Wednesday, December 13, the Senate Judiciary Committee on Criminal Justice, chaired by Sen. David...

BILL OF RIGHTS DAY - December 15th, 2006

By Rick Jones and Larry Moore As the old saying goes, “if you don’t know your rights, you don’t have any”. In today’s society of hustle and bustle one really doesn’t take the time to really think about what their rights are. We take these rights for granted. Just about everyone knows what the First Amendment to the Constitution is, freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and freedom to...

Media temper tantrums in full swing over HB347

The temper tantrums of the anti-gun media elites are in full swing following the override of Bob Taft's veto of HB347. Akron Beacon Journal: Gunning to be mayor : Jim Irvine, the chairman of the Buckeye Firearms Association, applauded the Ohio Senate for joining the House in overriding Gov. Bob Taft's veto of legislation concerning the carrying of concealed weapons. He added that lawmakers...

Plain Dealer journalist "in closest touch" proven out of touch on HB347

By Chad D. Baus On December 4, I wrote an article drawing attention to two editorials in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. In the first editorial, dated August 7, the editorial board endorsed the idea of statewide preemption of local gun laws, saying: This page continues to look skeptically on concealed carry, but consistency in the form of statewide, uniform standards makes more sense than a confusing...
