ifeminists.com: Women need to defend themselves
"Women need to defend themselves, especially single women or those with husbands overseas. And the media has a responsibility to discuss honestly the issue of gun ownership. The John Walsh Show (search) on NBC may have dealt a blow (4/29) to both goals by "ambushing" three women who agreed to discuss their gun ownership and advocacy on air."

"Maria Heil (search) of Second Amendment Sisters, Tiffany Hyatt Theroit (search) of Armed Females of America and Lisa Marquez (search) had reason to trust John Walsh. The show's Web site describes him as "a tireless advocate for victims' rights and missing children." Moreover, Walsh claims to support the Second Amendment.
Why, then, is Maria's commentary about the show entitled "Liar, Liar"? Why does Tiffany accuse the show's staff of "invading our lives and using the fact that Lisa and I were victims to set us up." Why has Lisa released a public statement to explain she was "lied to" and declare that she, her friends and her family are "very disappointed" in Walsh?
This is the state of the gun debate in North America. Maria's two daughters — aged 10 and 12 — had to hear their mother called a criminal for legally owning a gun by a woman who boasts of illegally owning one. A battered woman and a rape victim were incessantly harangued while Walsh's staff reportedly did nothing but suggest an escalation of the conflict.
Tiffany commented, "Whether women carry a firearm is their choice, but there is nothing wrong with having ... an informed decision." The media should facilitate this information flow, not halt it." "
Raw data from the Justice Department’s annual National Crime Victim Survey show that when a woman resists a “stranger rape” with a gun, the probability of completion was 0.1% and of victim injury 0.1%, compared to 31% and 40% respectively, for all stranger rapes. Woman who resisted with a gun were 2.5 times more likely to escape without injury than those who did not resist, and 4 times more likely to escape uninjured than those who resisted with any means other than a gun.” (Southwick, Journal of Criminal Justice, 2000)

“Unfortunately 88 percent of the violent crimes reported to the National Crime Victimization Survey in 1992 were committed away from the victim’s home.” Gary Kleck, Targeting Guns.
A Dept. of Justice survey found that 40% of felons chose not to commit at least some crimes for fear their victims were armed, and 34% admitted having been scared off or shot at by armed victims. (James D. Wright and Peter H. Rossi, Armed and Considered Dangerous, Aldine de Gruyter, 1986)
"Murder rates decline when either more women or more men carry concealed handguns, but the effect is especially pronounced for women. An additional woman carrying a concealed handgun reduces the murder rate for women by about three to four times more than an additional man carrying a concealed handgun reduces the murder rate for men." More Guns, Less Crime. John R. Lott, Jr.
With all the evidence that concealed carry laws will benefit women the most, why is the Ohio League of Women Voters telling Ohio women to oppose House Bill 12?
