NSSF: Cleveland Out of Running to Host Future Firearms Industry Summit

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has released the following press release in response to the City of Cleveland's new gun control laws.

In recent months, the city of Cleveland, Ohio, has been working with NSSF to be considered as the host location for a future NSSF Industry Summit. Given Cleveland’s excellent revitalization efforts in recent years, its number of good hotels and wealth of respected eating establishments, we considered the city one of our top choices to host the Summit in 2016 or 2017.

That all changed with the announcement on April 20 that Cleveland’s City Council had passed sweeping new gun-control legislation. Among the measures instituted, many of which are redundancies of state laws already in place and intended to generate a revenue stream of fines for the city, are new requirements to report to police private gun sales, restrict use of firearms by anyone under 18 years of age without the use of adult supervision and requiring gun owners to report to law enforcement a lost or stolen firearm within 48 hours of when the owner should have known the firearm was lost or stolen.

In light of these developments, NSSF can no longer consider the City of Cleveland a candidate for hosting an event as important to our business as the Industry Summit. Events such as the Summit require a significant investment of our and our members’ dollars and time for the betterment of our industry. NSSF cannot permit that investment to benefit a city whose current leaders will not in turn support our 2nd Amendment rights and the continued success of the firearms industry. For more information on the NSSF Industry Summit or to have your city considered as the host location, contact Melissa Schilling, NSSF Director, Exhibitions & Conferences, [email protected].
