DeWine-Husted Campaign issues strong statement in response to calls for gun control

On the same day Governor John Kasich (R) was announcing his support for new gun control, the DeWine-Husted for Ohio campaign released a statement opposing ANY reduction of the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens, and opposing ANY bans.

Mike DeWine and Jon Husted Statement on Protecting Children

"We support increasing Ohio’s criminal penalties for people who illegally buy guns for criminals and agree that more should be done to require local courts to follow laws about submitting criminal convictions on time to our background check system. However, reducing the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners or proposing new bans doesn't address the problem.

To better prevent tragedies like the one in Parkland, Florida, we must better address both mental health and the security of our schools. Last week, we released three immediate steps a DeWine Husted administration would take to protect our kids at school. That proposal must receive the same attention."

The campaign also re-released a press release issued on February 19, which outlines three immediate steps Attorney General Mike DeWine and Secretary of State Husted believe must be taken to provide greater protection for our kids.

DeWine Husted Campaign Announces Plan to Protect Children from Threats in School

COLUMBUS – In an effort to keep our children safe, the DeWine Husted campaign today announced three initial and immediate steps they would take in office to protect our children from violent attacks in schools.

1. In a DeWine Husted administration, there will be a licensed mental health professional in every school in Ohio. Ohio needs a mental health system in schools that can serve the immediate needs of our kids, while also identifying threats against them.

2. Ohio has a Strategic Analysis and Information Center (known as the “Fusion Center”) that provides intelligence and threat assessments to Ohio law enforcement. The DeWine Husted administration will insist that the fusion center use every current and emerging technology to analyze, investigate, and intercept any threats to Ohio children and schools.

3. More than 1,300 law enforcement agencies and courts are required to submit information into Ohio’s background check system. The DeWine Husted administration will advance the work Mike DeWine has done as Attorney General to build a 21st century, statewide data infrastructure that will ensure we keep guns out of the hands of criminals and others who are prohibited from owning firearms.

“We must protect our children at all times – especially in school,” said Attorney General Mike DeWine. “These are tangible efforts that will help ensure that our kids get the help and protection they need.”

Buckeye Firearms Association is thankful that our primary endorsees continue to stand against the "blame the tools" crowd, and instead focus on real solutions, including the arming of willing school faculty.

While some, including President Trump and Governor Kasich continue to "pivot" and "evolve," Mike DeWine and Jon Husted continue to remain firm. Those who are standing with us in times like these are proving they will stand with us through anything.
